New research suggests AI 'reasoning' models might be as effective at problem-solving as a Grunt with a plasma grenade: disastrous.

Reasoning Models? More Like Memory Models!

Alright Spartans listen up. I've seen a lot of tech in my day from energy swords to slipspace drives but this AI 'reasoning' thing? Seems like the Covenant’s plasma pistol: hyped up but ultimately disappointing. Turns out these fancy AI models from the likes of OpenAI and Alphabet which were supposed to be the next step towards super intelligence might just be memorizing patterns instead of actually thinking. Like a Marine who only knows how to pull the trigger and shout 'Wort wort wort!'

Apple's Core Dump: The Illusion of Thinking

Apple the guys who brought you the shiny fruit themed gadgets released a paper called 'The Illusion of Thinking.' Sounds about right. They found that these models can't handle complex problems and basically crash when things get too hard. It's like giving a plasma rifle to a civilian; they look cool holding it but they have no idea how to use it. And it does not generalize! These things are supposed to learn and adapt not just regurgitate data.

Jagged Intelligence: Sharp on Benchmarks Dull in Real Life

Other smart folks at Salesforce and Anthropic are raising alarms too. Salesforce calls it 'jagged intelligence.' I call it 'Grunt level intellect.' Good at one thing useless at everything else. They say there's a big gap between what these AI models can do and what businesses actually need. Reminds me of fighting the Flood: effective in a contained area but let 'em spread and you're in trouble. The models do really well on benchmarks but very common sense things that you and I would do in our sleep is awful. That's I think a fundamental limitation of reasoning models right now.

Nvidia's AI Power Surge: A Hundred Times More Computation Needed?!

Nvidia the ones making all the fancy chips for these AI systems says we need a hundred times more computing power than they thought. 'The amount of computation we need at this point as a result of agentic AI as a result of reasoning is easily a hundred times more than we thought we needed this time last year,' says Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. Sounds like someone's trying to sell more hardware. But if these AI models are this hungry for power and still can't think straight maybe we should stick to good old fashioned Spartan training. And energy swords. Can't forget the energy swords.

Apple's Delay Tactics: Is This Just a PR Stunt?

Now some folks think Apple is just trying to change the conversation because they're behind in the AI race. They had to delay their Siri upgrades and they weren't showing off much AI stuff at their big developer conference. Daniel Newman Futurum Group CEO said Apple's paper after WWDC sounds more like 'Oops look over here we don't know exactly what we're doing.' Are they playing catch up or just throwing a smoke grenade? Hard to say. But it smells fishier than the swamps on Installation 05. Maybe their saying LLMs and reasoning don't really work in an attempt to divert attention from what they do not have.

Cortana I Miss You: The Real AI Still Seems Far Away

Look I've fought through hordes of Covenant faced down the Flood and even teamed up with the Arbiter. I know what real intelligence looks like and it's not some program that crashes when you ask it a hard question. We're still a long way from a true AI like Cortana. Until then I'll stick to my instincts and my MA5D assault rifle. It may not be 'reasoning,' but it gets the job done. The situation is perfectly hopeless. That's when I do my best work.
