A Hobbit's Breakfast is Cheaper Than You Think!

Hoom! It has come to my attention even in the Shire that many of you fine folk are letting gold slip through your fingers like water! For nearly a year this… mortal… has been mindlessly swiping a credit card for coffee. Coffee! A necessity I grant you especially for long journeys to Mordor but did you know that many credit cards offer statement credits? Like finding a mithril vest under your floorboards these credits are free money waiting to be claimed! This particular card offered up to $84 a year at a regular coffee spot but only if one enrolled. 'A fool's hope,' you might say but no! A simple click is all it takes. Wake up Middle earth!

One Does Not Simply Walk into Free Money (Without Enrolling)

Alas these offers are as fleeting as Radagast's rabbits! They change often and require manual activation. One must log into their card issuer’s website or app and click the correct buttons. 'Why must it be so difficult?' you cry. Because my friends Sauron hides the best treasures in plain sight. The author of this article found a Dunkin' credit by checking the 'benefits' tab. It was a reminder to check benefits more frequently at least every few months.

Even Wizards Love a Good Discount

These statement credits are no mere trinkets; they can offset the dreaded annual fees that come with some premium cards. This particular mortal uses an American Express Gold card burdened with a $325 annual fee. But fear not! By strategically utilizing statement credits such as dining credits Uber Cash Resy dining credits and Dunkin' credits this fee is more than covered totaling $424 annually! It's like turning lead into gold… or at least paying for your second breakfast with it.

Not All Who Wander Are Lost (But Some Spend Too Much)

This mortal chose the card for its statement credits ensuring they're not chasing points unnecessarily. 'Fly you fools!' one might say to those chasing rewards without considering the annual fee. Other cards offer similar value; Chase's Sapphire Preferred Card for instance. The key is to choose a card that aligns with your spending habits. Use the credits for things you already buy and do. Don't let the dragon tempt you into buying things you do not need!

Short Term Offers: A Wizard's Limited Time Spell

Beyond these longer term statement credits many cards offer fleeting short term credits often listed as 'offers' or 'deals.' They require activation and run for a limited time. For instance the writer enrolled in an offer for the streaming service Max just in time for the annual subscription renewal which gives a $25 rebate on a purchase of $99 or more. This is no different than a wizard's limited time spell! Use them wisely!

Pay Your Balance You Shall Not Pass (Into Debt)

But heed my warning! None of these perks matter if you carry a balance. With interest rates near 21% any savings would be swiftly devoured by interest charges. 'A Balrog of debt!' one might cry. Pay your balance in full each month lest you find yourself in a dark place surrounded by goblins of unpaid bills. It is the only way to truly come out ahead with a rewards card. Now off you go to find your own financial treasures! And remember 'All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.' Spend it wisely!
