A Storm is Brewing in the East (and West)

Hark my friends! A shadow has fallen upon the lands darker than the eaves of Mirkwood! President Trump in a move that would make even Sauron raise an eyebrow has decreed that seven nations – Japan South Korea Malaysia Kazakhstan South Africa Laos and Myanmar – shall face tariffs of varying and rather unsettling degrees. It seems 'Not all those who wander are lost,' but perhaps 'all those who trade' are now bewildered.

One Tariff to Rule Them All?

These tariffs ranging from a stout 25% to a formidable 40% are to be levied upon the goods of these lands. It is said these rates are to 'correct' trade imbalances but I wonder is this correction or merely a new form of entanglement? Trump in his missives – or rather social media posts – hints at adjustments based on 'relationships.' I've seen more subtle diplomacy from a Balrog.

The Markets Tremble as Does the Ground in Mordor

As these pronouncements echoed across the land the financial markets buckled. The Dow Jones S&P 500 and Nasdaq all stumbled as if caught in a Shelob's web. The air is thick with uncertainty a most unsettling brew. One does not simply impose tariffs without consequence. Remember the Long Winter? This may yet prove a frosty season for all involved.

A Brief Respite or a False Dawn?

A temporary reprieve was granted a pause of 90 days to lower the burden to a mere 10%. But now this grace period wanes and the original tariffs threaten to return like Orcs from the Misty Mountains. There is talk of extensions and delays but such promises are as slippery as Gollum with the One Ring.

Transshipping: A Treachery Worthy of Saruman?

Ah but there's more! A warning against 'transshipping,' that is diverting goods through other lands to avoid these levies. Such trickery the letters proclaim will be met with the higher tariffs anyway. Truly the eye of Sauron – or in this case Trump – sees all. Yet where there's a whip there's a way. Even the smallest hobbit can sometimes outwit the tallest foe.

The Eagle Eyes the Horizon – What Lies Ahead?

The future remains uncertain like the path through the Dead Marshes. These new tariffs are not set in stone and may be adjusted as deemed appropriate. But be warned the President is keen to retaliate so I suggest these leaders not respond in kind unless they wish to see tariffs go up even more. Let us hope cooler heads prevail and the spirit of cooperation is rekindled. For as I always say 'Even the smallest person can change the course of the future.' Let us hope they change it for the better!
