A Disturbance in the Force (Field...of Healthcare)
Hark dear readers! Gandalf the Grey or perhaps more aptly Gandalf the Slightly Concerned brings tidings from a realm far removed from Middle earth yet strangely familiar in its potential for chaos: the world of digital healthcare! It seems a shadow has fallen upon several hospitals within the Community Health Systems (CHS) not by the hand of Sauron but by the accidental keystroke of an Oracle engineer. One does not simply delete critical storage yet alas it appears someone did! For five long days these havens of healing were plunged into a semi dark age forced to rely on that most ancient of technologies: paper.
Forty Five Hospitals Walk Into Mordor (Figuratively Speaking)
Forty five hospitals if Becker's Hospital Review is to be believed found themselves facing the digital equivalent of Mordor. The outage beginning on April 23rd arose from maintenance work gone awry. Imagine! A simple task meant to improve things instead unleashing a digital dragon upon the system. The good news and I use the term loosely is that it wasn't a cyberattack. No orcs infiltrating the servers this time just good old fashioned human error. One might say 'Fly you fools!'...but perhaps a bit too late eh?
No Material Impact? Tell That to the Patients!
Now CHS claims there was 'no material impact'. A bold statement wouldn't you agree? I imagine the nurses and doctors scrambling for parchment and quill might disagree. While they are to be commended for their professionalism it is a dangerous thing to say that the temporary loss of essential patient data has no great significance! I suspect a few worried patients might have a different tale to tell. For as Bilbo Baggins knows all too well 'It's a dangerous business Frodo going out your door...'
Oracle's Billion Dollar Blunder (and a Half)
Oracle of course remained mysteriously silent when asked for comment like Smaug guarding his hoard. Perhaps they were too busy counting the $28.3 billion they spent acquiring Cerner in 2022? A hefty sum indeed for a system that seems prone to such...mishaps. One can only hope they invested in some good debugging spells because a malfunctioning EHR is no laughing matter.
Echoes of the VA Fiasco
This latest incident echoes Oracle's struggles with the Department of Veterans Affairs. A 'thorny years long EHR rollout' plagued by patient safety concerns you say? It appears Oracle has a knack for turning cutting edge technology into a blunt instrument. Perhaps they should consult a wizard...oh wait. I am one! Though I doubt I could debug their code with a flick of my staff.
Hope Remains But Vigilance is Key
The systems are back online the hospitals are returning to 'normal operations' but the memory of this digital hiccup lingers. Let this serve as a reminder: technology like the One Ring can be a powerful tool but it must be wielded with caution and wisdom. For even the best laid plans can go awry and as I once told Frodo 'All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.' Let us hope Oracle uses this time wisely to ensure such calamities do not befall us again. Or perhaps just perhaps they should consider hiring a few hobbits. They may lack technical skills but their resilience is unmatched.

Why didn't they have a backup system in place? Seems like basic IT, no?
