France bets big on Eutelsat to challenge Starlink's dominance in the satellite broadband biz. Will they succeed, or is it just another 'hold on to your head' moment?
France bets big on Eutelsat to challenge Starlink's dominance in the satellite broadband biz. Will they succeed, or is it just another 'hold on to your head' moment?

A Pile of Rocks vs. A Whole Quarry!

Yabba Dabba Doo! It's your pal Fred Flinstone here bringing you the lowdown on this whole satellite kerfuffle. Seems like France is throwing a whole lotta clams – 1.58 billion of 'em! – at this here Eutelsat company. They're trying to build somethin' that can go head to head with that Elon Musk fella's Starlink. Now I ain't no rocket scientist (I barely understand my dino crane at the quarry) but it sounds like tryin' to build a car outta pebbles when the other guy's got a whole pile of rocks! Eutelsat merged with some British company OneWeb hopin' to make a splash but Starlink's got over 7,000 of them flyin' machines up in the sky! Eutelsat well they're a bit…behind.

Europe in Space? More Like Europe in the Stone Age!

Listen I love Europe! Great bronto burgers in Paris uh I mean Paree adise. But when it comes to space they're stuck in the Stone Age! They still gotta borrow launchin' services from America which is like me askin' Barney to help me with my bowling – embarrassing! Eutelsat's got a market value of about 1.6 billion euros but this Starlink fella they're worth like 350 billion! That's enough clams to buy Bedrock ten times over! It's like comparing Wilma's pearl necklace to the Great Gazoo's spaceship – no contest!

A Strategic Asset? Or Just a Shiny Rock?

Some fancy pants analyst says this investment means France is treatin' Eutelsat less like a company and more like somethin' important like my bowling ball! They call it a "strategic asset" for this here European Union thingy. Sounds important right? But building a Starlink competitor? That ain't no picnic! It's gonna take more than just throwin' money at it. It's like tryin' to teach Dino to play fetch – you need more than just a bone you need patience and a whole lotta luck!

LEO Satellites: Not Just a New Dance Craze!

Apparently this here Eutelsat needs more of these LEO satellites. Not sure what LEO stands for – maybe "Lotsa Expensive Orbits"? Eutelsat's OneWeb only got 650 of 'em while Starlink's got over 7,600! That's like bringin' a slingshot to a bronto battle! And to make matters worse some of Eutelsat's satellites are getting old. Time to send 'em to the junkyard I reckon! An expert even said that Eutelsat has a little chance of succeeding in the mass market compared to Starlink given SpaceX's global scale. Even with all the money that was given from the French state Eutelsat continues to lag behind Starlink in several key areas including capital manufacturing throughput launch access spectrum and user terminals.

Ukraine Gets a New Toy (But Still Plays with the Old One)

Now here's a twist! There were rumors that Eutelsat might replace Starlink in Ukraine. Seems like Starlink's been helpin' 'em fight the bad guys but things got a little rocky with those guys in the suits that maybe they will cut Ukraine off from Starlink's services. So Germany bless their sauerkraut lovin' hearts set up a thousand Eutelsat terminals in Ukraine as another tool for them to use. But don't get confused by this because Starlink is still their main satellite provider. Eutelsat's previous boss even admitted they couldn't handle all of Ukraine's connection needs! It's like tryin' to feed the whole Bedrock population with just one rib of brontosaurus not gonna happen!

Apples and Oranges... or Maybe Bronto Burgers and Dino Ribs?

Even though Eutelsat's been pumpin' money into their OneWeb unit these experts say their technology is still different from Starlink's. Sounds like apples and oranges to me – or maybe bronto burgers and dino ribs! Eutelsat also uses these GEO satellites that are leveraged for specialized use cases such as polar coverage for companies and research facilities in remote regions like Greenland and Alaska but it's not the same thing. Eutelsat says they're gonna "build upon its operation improvements" with a "differentiated go to market model" and a "strong European anchoring." Sounds like a bunch of fancy words to me! Will they catch up to Starlink? Only time will tell. But right now it looks like Starlink's still the king of the space hill! Yabba Dabba Doo!
