A Galaxy Far Far Away... From Fair Trade
The Force is strong with this one... or perhaps just strong willed. It is I Darth Vader reporting on the latest disturbance in the economic Force. Emperor… I mean President Trump has declared a 50% tariff on the European Union. Apparently their trade practices have displeased the Emperor. "Their discussions are going nowhere!" he declared a sentiment I can relate to when dealing with rebellious Jedi. Perhaps he should try the Force Choke method? Just a suggestion.
Apple's Rebellion: Made in America or Feel My Wrath
As if the EU wasn't enough Apple is now in Trump's sights. The decree is clear: manufacture in the United States or face a 25% tariff. A bold move even for a Sith Lord. I can almost hear Tim Cook's screams from here... It's like when I told Lando Calrissian “I am altering the deal. Pray I don’t alter it any further.” Perhaps Apple should consider aligning with the dark side. We have cookies... and unlimited power.
Market Chaos: Fear Leads to Anger Anger Leads to Tariffs
Unsurprisingly the markets have reacted with the grace of a clumsy Jawa. Stocks are plummeting faster than the Millennium Falcon escaping the Death Star. Trump's tariff threats are causing more volatility than a podrace on Tatooine. One must wonder is this strategic brilliance or a reckless gamble? "You have controlled your fear. Now release your anger. Only your hatred can destroy me.” Unless of course it destroys the global economy first.
The EU Strikes Back? Or Just Whimpers?
The EU that den of… *diplomats* claims to be shocked. Shocked I say! They've been warned. Their "powerful Trade Barriers" and "ridiculous Corporate Penalties" have not gone unnoticed. The Emperor demands tribute and he's not one for negotiation. The European Commission declined to comment. A wise decision. Sometimes silence is the most powerful weapon. “Be careful not to choke on your aspirations EU.”
The Art of the Deal: A Disturbance in the Force
Trump who recently touted "deals" with China and the UK has now reversed course. Perhaps he's realized that diplomacy is for the weak. Tariffs on the other hand are a sign of strength. A power move if you will. As Treasury Secretary Bessent so eloquently put it Trump hopes this will "light a fire under the EU." I concur. Fear will keep the local systems in line… and maybe the EU too.
The Central Bank's Woe: Stagflationary Nightmare
Even the Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee is feeling the dark side of these tariffs. He fears a "stagflationary impact," which is apparently a very bad thing for central bankers. It slows down output and raises prices. A double whammy of economic doom. But who cares about the Central Bank? They should feel the power of the dark side. "The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force... and tariffs."
