A Tariff Disturbance in the Force

The Force is strong but so are these blasted tariffs! Abercrombie & Fitch a purveyor of… *acceptable* apparel has felt the sting of the Dark Side of economics. They’ve had to revise their profit outlook anticipating a $50 million disturbance in their financial Force field. I find their lack of profit… disturbing. Full year earnings per share are now projected to be between $9.50 and $10.50 a slight step down. Perhaps they should have foreseen this… like a Jedi Master or at least a competent accountant.

Operating Margins: A Measured Retreat

Their operating margin forecast has also taken a hit. Down to 12.5% 13.5%. A pathway to the dark side this is. It seems a 30% tariff on imports from China and a 10% levy on goods from various other planets… I mean *countries* are to blame. These tariffs... they are our undoing.

A New Hope or Just a Lucky Shot?

Despite this fiscal Imperial entanglements Abercrombie's shares surged over 14%! A surprise to be sure but a welcome one. Their first quarter results defied expectations with both earnings per share and revenue exceeding Wall Street’s predictions. Perhaps they used the Force… or just a very good marketing strategy. Earnings per share: $1.59 vs. $1.39 expected and Revenue: $1.10 billion vs. $1.07 billion expected. Impressive… most impressive. Almost as impressive as blowing up the Death Star.

Hollister's Rebellion: A Victory for the Underdogs

While Abercrombie faced a 4% sales slump (a dark omen indeed!) their Hollister brand is flourishing like a well watered succulent on Tatooine with sales surging 22%. Apparently the younglings still prefer Hollister's wares. Perhaps they offer a more appealing… *uniform* for the Rebellion against bad fashion? Hollister is now the brand that will bring balance to Abercrombie it seems.

Mitigation Strategies: A Cautious Approach

To counter these trade duties Abercrombie is seeking ways to mitigate. It sounds like a trap! They’re diversifying their sourcing network and looking for expense reductions. Finance chief Robert Ball claims they aren’t planning “broad based” price increases. They seek to avoid a full blown price increase? How bold how risky. This is their only hope. The Force will decide their fate I suppose.

Vacation Shop: The Force Awakens (Again)

They're also launching a vacation shop… because apparently even commoners require specialized apparel for their leisure activities. Will this vacation shop succeed where others have failed? I sense… potential. Also Abercrombie is addressing its problems with the Abercrombie brand to push sales there. There will be no turning back.
