The Emperor's New Groove (in the Courts)

The Force is strong with this one... or so Trump believes. The Supreme Court has decided to clip the wings of federal judges preventing them from issuing those pesky 'universal injunctions'. You know the ones that stopped the Emperor – I mean President Trump – from reshaping the galaxy... I mean the U.S. citizenship rules. As if the judicial branch could hold back the will of the Force... or you know an executive order.

A Divided Court a Divided Galaxy

The decision split along ideological lines like a lightsaber duel gone wrong allows the Trump administration to boldly go where no administration has gone before. They’re aiming to disrupt long standing rules. Trump ever the humble servant of the people proclaimed a 'GIANT WIN' on social media. One might say his ego is more powerful than a fully armed and operational Death Star.

These Aren't the Injunctions You're Looking For

The Supreme Court decreed that these 'universal injunctions' are 'likely' exceeding the authority granted to federal courts by the Senate... I mean Congress. The Court granted the Trump administration's request to pause those injunctions but only when they're broader than they need to be. It's like saying 'You can choke them but only a little bit.' Is that even possible?

Birthright Citizenship: A New Hope (or a Phantom Menace?)

The Court wisely decided to avoid the hot potato of whether ending birthright citizenship is constitutional. Justice Amy Coney Barrett one of the Emperor's chosen ones argued that courts shouldn't be meddling with the Executive Branch's business. 'Federal courts do not exercise general oversight of the Executive Branch; they resolve cases and controversies'. She forgot the key thing; the Courts were meant to challenge power not bow down to it.

Rebellious Outcries in the Senate... Courtroom

Justice Sotomayor channeling her inner Princess Leia delivered a blistering dissent. She decried the government's attempts to end birthright citizenship and accused her conservative colleagues of 'gamesmanship'. 'No right is safe in the new legal regime the Court creates,' she lamented. You know like the Rebel Alliance facing the might of the Empire. Same difference.

Existential Threats and the Rule of Law

Justice Jackson added her own fiery dissent claiming the decision was an 'existential threat to the rule of law.' She accused the Court of granting the government permission to engage in 'unlawful behavior'. Clearly some people don't understand the power of the dark side and I feel obligated to bring some discipline to this court.
