Drama Alert: Fortnite Tries to Re Enter the Appleverse
Hey besties! Barbie here your fave plastic icon reporting live from my Dreamhouse! So remember when Fortnite and Apple had that HUGE fight? Well grab your popcorn because the saga continues! Epic Games those masterminds behind Fortnite just tossed their game back into the App Store ring after being MIA since 2020. Can you believe it's been that long? Talk about a fashion faux pas to disappear like that! Anyway it all went down after Epic tried to be all rebel without a cause and bypassed Apple's commissions. Apple naturally wasn't thrilled. Talk about a cat fight!
Judge Judy to the Rescue!
Last month a judge stepped in like the Fairy Godmother waving her gavel and saying 'Bibbidi bobbidi boo Apple can't charge commissions on those link outs!' It was a victory for Epic Games. But hold your horses dreamers because Apple still has the power to say 'Nope not in my App Store!' It's like trying to get Ken to commit – complicated! Apple's lawyers are appealing so this drama is far from over. They're saying 'Math is hard,' (a quote from Teen Talk Barbie) when it comes to those commission percentages!
The Commission Conundrum: A Developer's Nightmare?
You see Apple takes a cut – like 15% to 30% – from every purchase made inside their apps. Ouch! Linking to your website is like finding a secret sale rack – it avoids those fees. Apple tried to be sneaky and offer link outs but wanted a 27% cut. Before last month’s ruling Amazon's Kindle app wouldn't even let you buy books! Now there's a button that takes you straight to Amazon's website. Talk about a glow up!
Europe to the Rescue (Again!)
Okay so here's a fun fact: Fortnite's actually been available on iPhones in Europe since last year. The Digital Markets Act is like Europe’s version of the Dreamhouse rules – they allow third party app stores! Score! Plus you can always play Fortnite through cloud gaming. Multi platform access is the way to go these days.
Why This Matters (Besides the Obvious Drama)
This whole Apple vs. Epic Games showdown has shifted the app development game or so they say. It’s like when I decided to become an astronaut – everyone started dreaming bigger. Now developers like Amazon and Spotify are flexing their muscles and dodging those Apple commissions. Who knows what's next? Maybe I'll launch my own app store! Barbie's App Emporium – coming soon!
Will Fortnite Stick the Landing?
So will Apple let Fortnite back in? Will Ken finally commit? Only time will tell my fashionable friends. Stay tuned for more updates and remember: 'We girls can do anything!' (Except maybe escape Apple's ecosystem entirely... just kidding... mostly!) Until next time keep sparkling!
