Hold Up Small Caps?

Alright check it. The S&P 500 is acting all high and mighty near record highs but word on the street is the small cap stocks might steal the show. The Russell 2000 is up 0.8% this week which is apparently a big deal. Nine winning weeks out of ten? That’s like finding a Neuralyzer that still works after 20 years. Keeps everyone’s attention. Even mine and I've seen things that would make your head explode...literally. Still down 4% for the year so there is a lot of work to be done and if I know anything its that you should never start a fight but always finish it.

Small Cap Summer is Coming?

Some market guru named Krinsky is throwing around the term "small cap summer.” Sounds like a bad alien invasion movie but whatever. Apparently these stocks have room to catch up to the big boys. Think of it like this: the big stocks are the flashy alien tech spaceships and the small caps are the beat up Ford LTD we use. Reliable but ugly. But what's driving this? The economy hasn't changed that much. Guess it's like trying to figure out why Frank the Pug likes opera.

Short Stories and Long Odds

Bank of America is saying that there are a lot of bets against these small cap stocks. Short interest they call it. More pronounced than with the larger stocks. Could be a bunch of nervous investors covering their assets pushing prices up. You know like when a rookie agent accidentally fires a plasma cannon in Times Square. Everyone scrambles.

Tariffs Rates and Maybe a Little Magic

So inflation isn’t going bonkers because of tariffs. That’s good for these smaller companies. And if the Federal Reserve decides to cut rates? Even better. Angelo Kourkafas from Edward Jones says these stocks are super sensitive to high interest rates which have been a real buzzkill for the Russell 2000. “They are the ones that are the most sensitive to the high interest rate regime that we have and it's been a big headwind for the Russell 2000,” he said.

No Recession? Hello 2026!

If we dodge a recession in 2025 then 2026 is looking brighter. Tariffs might be sorted out and there could be new tax cuts. Earnings estimates for this year are down but 2026 is holding steady. Kourkafas thinks small cap earnings could outshine the big boys if things stay stable. Basically it’s like hoping the world doesn’t end because some alien decides to use Earth as a bowling ball.

Acceleration Time?

Kourkafas also said "There's been many false starts if you will or fake outs. But given that we've been in a multi year period of depressed earnings delivery for small caps at some point and maybe that point is 2026 we're going to see the cyclical re acceleration”. I've seen more false starts than a MiB recruit on his first day. Let’s just hope this isn’t another Neuralyzer flash in the pan. Remember a person is smart. People are dumb panicky dangerous animals. So keep your eyes peeled. You never know what's out there...or what the market will do next.
