Fortune and Glory Kid. Fortune and Glory... and Restricted AI!
Alright folks gather 'round! Your old pal Indy's got a story hotter than the Hovitos idol. Word's out of Beijing that the Chinese are tightening the reins on AI in schools. Apparently letting kids loose with unchecked generative AI is a bigger no no than serving chilled monkey brains at a state dinner. They're worried about what the little tykes might conjure up with these digital Ouija boards. It brings to mind that saying 'It's not the years honey it's the mileage.' Well it's not the AI it's how the kids use it!
Primary School Perils: No AI Raiders Here!
Now listen to this. Primary school students are basically banned from playing around with these AI tools unsupervised. Teachers can use it to help with lessons mind you but the kids? Nope. Think of it like this: giving a kid a whip without teaching them how to use it is just asking for trouble. One minute they are writing reports the next they are trying to swing over a chasm. It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye... or generates a highly questionable essay.
Middle School Musings: Decoding the Matrix (Sort Of)
Middle schoolers get a slightly longer leash. They're allowed to poke around and see how generative AI thinks reasons and analyzes. Which sounds like a good way to end up with a bunch of 13 year olds convinced they've cracked the code to the universe. But it seems they believe knowledge is like a river ever flowing ever changing. The kids must learn the ways of AI like I learned the ways of ancient civilizations.
High School High Jinks: A Brave New World (Maybe)
High schoolers? Well they're practically given the keys to the kingdom! They can use the tech 'more broadly.' I shudder to think what kind of term papers they'll be churning out. I bet they will be experts at crafting convincing fake historical accounts. If I didn't know any better I'd say they want them to be able to outsmart the Soviets. The trouble is technology is not the same as wisdom. Knowledge is like a deadly weapon.
Homework Hell: No Copy Paste Crusaders!
But here's the kicker. No direct copying of AI generated content into homework! Quelle horreur! And schools have to come up with lists of 'approved' AI tools. Approved by whom I wonder? Sounds like someone's been watching too many dystopian sci fi flicks. I have a bad feeling about this. Reminds me of that time I found myself in that pit of snakes. 'Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?' I was thinking 'Why did it have to be government approved AI tools?'
The People's Daily Speaks... Sort Of
Even the People's Daily chimed in burying the news on page six focusing on the 'scientific' and 'standardized' promotion of AI education. Sounds about as exciting as a lecture on Mesopotamian pottery. But the truth is out there folks. They're trying to control the narrative and that's usually when things get interesting. As my father used to say 'This is intolerable!' Maybe it is time for Indy to dust off his fedora get his whip and go teach them the ways of AI
