Wernstrom! A Looming Crisis!
Good news everyone! Or perhaps extremely bad news depending on how you feel about cars that... *do* things. I Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth have stumbled upon a rather troubling development. It appears those rascals in China are tightening their grip on the world's supply of rare earth elements! These elements you see are frightfully important. Not just for powering my Smell O Scope (patent pending!) but for the infernal combustion engines and electric gizmos those automobile fellows rely on. And now the auto industry is worried terribly worried! Like a Yancy Fry Jr. living in the shadow of his older brother they are beginning to see the shortages and the production halts!
Export Controls? More Like Existential Comedies!
Apparently since early April China's Ministry of Commerce has been fiddling with export controls restricting the flow of these precious rare earth elements. It seems like those chaps are not approving the license applications needed to export the minerals. About 25% approvals! It's all part of a feud they are pointing their fingers at that rascal President Donald Trump! Now now let's not start a global war over this unless it involves giant robots of course. Shutting down production lines? That's the sort of thing that gets a scientist's gears turning. I wonder if it affects my doomsday devices... perhaps I should check.
A Supply Chain Snarl! Oh the Humanity!
CLEPA a bunch of fancy pants European auto suppliers are wringing their hands and saying that China's restrictions are already causing production shutdowns. 'With a deeply intertwined global supply chain China's export restrictions are already shutting down production in Europe's supplier sector,' they cry! Meanwhile in Germany the VDA the automotive industry lobby has added to the clamor expressing their concern about the challenges of supply and production. It's enough to make a scientist shout 'Good News Everyone!' and then immediately regret it.
Critical Minerals? Critically Important!
The globalists say that demand for these rare earths and critical minerals is expected to grow exponentially! This is because of some nonsense about the 'clean energy transition.' Bah! Humbug! As if clean energy is a match for a good old fashioned pile of dark matter. China meanwhile remains the big kahuna in this critical mineral business producing roughly 60% of the world's supply. America of course is scrambling to catch up. I hope they have a backup plan because if they don't they're going to be singing the blues! To shreds you say? Well how's his wife holding up? To shreds you say?
Mercedes and BMW Respond! Vhat?
Now those Germans! They have ideas! Mercedes Benz says they're working on strategies to secure their long term demand and mitigate supply risks. They are trying to reduce the amount of rare metals per vehicle. That's all well and good but I say where's the fun in that? Meanwhile those folks at Volkswagen claim their supply is stable. And BMW... well they didn't respond. Probably too busy building cars that drive themselves into walls or something. What what what???
Alternatives? Hmmm I'll Get Right on It!
So what's the solution? Well according to Nissan's CEO 'We need to continue finding alternatives for the future keeping flexibility and keeping our options open.' That sounds awfully vague doesn't it? As for myself I'm working on a device that will synthesize rare earth elements from common household dust. What? It could work! I just need a few more years a few more grants and a few more lab assistants... perhaps some from Omicron Persei 8. That should solve everything! Until then I remain your humble servant of science Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth. Good night!
