A City in Chaos... Sound Familiar?
The European Union. Another city another crisis. This time it's not the Joker but President Trump’s policies causing the ruckus. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas says it's 'unlike anything else.' Well I've dealt with Killer Croc so I'm not easily surprised. But 'disruptive' and 'unpredictable'? That's a recipe for disaster whether it's Gotham or Brussels.
Trade Wars: The New Kind of Anarchy
Trump's playing hardball with tariffs. A 20% duty here a pause there. It's economic chaos. The EU has countermeasures but they're on hold. It's like watching Penguin try to run a legitimate business. All bluster no stability. And let's not forget the steel aluminum and auto tariffs. It's a mess and even if they strike a deal the fallout's going to hit Europe hard. 'Some men just want to watch the world burn,' and some presidents apparently want to start trade wars.
Economic Uncertainty: A Dark Cloud Over Europe
European economic growth is expected to suffer. Inflation's a mystery. The European Central Bank is paralyzed unsure which way to move. Austria's central bank governor Robert Holzmann says they haven't seen this level of uncertainty in years. Klaas Knot The Netherlands Bank president compares it to the early days of the pandemic. 'Uncertainty... is a strong negative factor for growth.' Tell me about it. Try running a city when you don't know if Two Face is going to flip a coin or declare martial law.
A Glimmer of Hope... Or Is It Just Wishful Thinking?
Acting German finance minister Joerg Kukies thinks the Europe U.S. relationship isn't 'anywhere near a crisis moment.' Maybe he hasn't met the Riddler. 'Much more would need to happen for trust between the two parties to break.' Famous last words. Trust is a fragile thing especially in politics. Like a Batarang once it's thrown you can't always get it back.
Ukraine: The World Stage
Trump promised to end the war in a day. Sounds like something Ra's al Ghul would say before trying to destroy Gotham. The EU has been a major supporter of Ukraine but the U.S. contribution is significant. Kallas worries about what happens if the U.S. pulls back. 'If they are not supporting Ukraine anymore then it's becoming more difficult.' Exactly. Some fights you can't win alone. Even I need help from time to time. (Don't tell Alfred I said that.)
Pressure is Mounting...
Kallas wants more pressure on Russia to push them towards peace. A noble goal but it requires strength and resolve. The kind of strength I see lacking here. Still I will be watching. Keeping an eye on the world just like I keep an eye on Gotham. Because 'it's not who I am underneath but what I do that defines me.'
