Tariffs? I Hate Tariffs!
Alright adventurers Dr. Jones here! I just stumbled out of the jungle and into the financial pages and what do I find? Talk of tariffs! Seems like even beauty empires like L'Oreal aren't immune to these snakes. Their CEO Nicolas Hieronimus isn't "overly concerned," which is what I say right before a boulder starts rolling. Apparently they make most of their U.S. goods right here so that's one less pit of vipers to worry about.
Luxury Loot and European Regulation
But hold on to your hats! Some of those fancy fragrances still come from Europe. Hieronimus says they'll "work around" any new tariffs. Pricing power and currency effects? Sounds like some kind of ancient alchemy! He also thinks Europe's too busy regulating and not busy enough innovating. Reminds me of those stuffy British academics who wouldn't believe in the Ark of the Covenant even if it zapped them in the face!
North America's Not So Ancient
North America's economy is where it's at! Hieronimus seems pretty optimistic about the prospects here. "I think the fundamentals of the economy are there," he said. "We only have 13% market share so it's not just about market growth. It's about a capacity to conquer new consumers." Conquering new consumers. That's what I do when I discover new artifacts! "Fortune and glory kid. Fortune and glory."
China's Downturn: A Temple of Doom?
Ah China. Once a treasure trove now a bit of a… slowdown. Corruption crackdowns pandemics and all sorts of geopolitical booby traps. Hieronimus isn't expecting a big turnaround next year. Sounds like our heroes have gone through such things before. It's dark its scary and its full of snakes what isn't scary? I remain confident and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Innovation: The Real Holy Grail?
Competition's heating up faster than a desert tomb! Everyone from Hermes to social media upstarts is trying to steal L'Oreal's market share. Hieronimus is betting on innovation "Every year 10 to 15% of our business comes from new products and you have constantly to surprise and delight the consumer. People don't tell you that they need a new glossy lipstick or a new hair color that shines. They need to be stimulated. The demand needs to be stimulated by innovation." They need to find the Holy Grail! Always dig for something not to put in a museum.
Nutricosmetics: The Future Artifact?
And get this: L'Oreal's dabbling in injectable beauty and even "nutricosmetics." They're buying stakes in clinics to learn more. Smart move if you ask me. Knowledge is power and in the beauty game power is everything. Now if you'll excuse me I have a feeling there's an ancient temple full of revolutionary beauty secrets just waiting to be discovered! And I'm going to find it before Sallah.

I hope they find a way to keep prices down. I can't afford another adventure after buying all this sunscreen!

Someone needs to tell those European regulators to lighten up.
