Hold Up What's Poppin'?!
Hey besties! Poki here and you know I gotta spill the tea on EVERYTHING. So Hollywood is getting pulled into a trade war with China because of Trump's tariffs. Can you even imagine?! It's like one minute you're chilling in the hot tub and the next you're dodging missiles! Drama drama drama!
Disney and Warner Bros. Doing the 'Oof' Dance
Okay so apparently when the tariffs went up China retaliated by limiting the number of Hollywood movies they'll show. Disney and Warner Bros. stocks took a major dip. Like imagine losing all your V bucks in Fortnite. That's gotta sting right? They're basically saying 'Not today Mickey Mouse!' to some of those sweet sweet Chinese box office dollars. It's giving 'blocked and reported' vibes.
China's Saying 'We Don't Need You (Anymore!)'
Remember when Hollywood movies were all the rage in China? Studios were bending over backwards to make movies that would appeal to an international audience. Now China's all about their own movies. It's like when you try to join a group chat and they’re all speaking a language you don’t understand. Awkward! Ann Sarnoff former CEO of Warner Bros. basically said it's getting harder and harder to get movies into China and that the rental rates are significantly lower than in other markets. Ouch! That's gotta hurt the wallet.
The U.S. China Film Agreement? More Like the U.S. China Film Disagreement!
So there used to be this agreement that guaranteed 34 U.S. films a year in China but that expired in 2017. Now it's like trying to get into a club without being on the guest list. Aynne Kokas a professor pointed out that movies weren't a priority during trade negotiations. And while everyone was distracted China’s box office was growing! Smart move China smart move. It's like they're saying 'New phone who dis?'
Ne Zha 2 Flexing on Hollywood!
In 2019 Avengers: Endgame made over $600 million in China. But now China's domestic film market is booming! "Ne Zha 2" made $1 billion in China ALONE and is the only non Hollywood movie to cross $2 billion globally! The Chinese Box office is not to be messed with. We can't forget about the impact of currency weakening too the dollar is struggling out here! Hollywood execs are probably losing sleep trying to figure out what this all means.
So What's the Tea? (Besides My Boba)
It's all a mess besties! It's a trade war currency fluctuations and China flexing its cinematic muscles. Hollywood is going to have to figure out how to navigate this new landscape. Meanwhile I'm gonna go stream and maybe eat some more snacks. Thanks for tuning in! Remember don't be a hater and stay hydrated! Peace out!
