A Shadow Falls Upon the North

Hoom! It seems the whispers carried on the wind speak of tariffs those unpleasant economic burdens like taxes levied by Sauron himself! These tariffs implemented by the... *ahem*... current administration in the U.S. are causing quite a stir amongst our friends across the border in Canada. It would seem even the closest of allies are not immune to the trials of these times. I have seen such greed and folly before even in the hearts of kings. 'Not all those who wander are lost,' but perhaps some are simply misguided by the allure of gold.

The Numbers Speak (And They're Not Happy)

A wizard is never late nor is he early he arrives precisely when he means to. Similarly the numbers arrive precisely when they wish to convey unpleasant truths. In 2024 the trade between these two nations amounted to a staggering $762.1 billion! Yet these tariffs threaten to unravel such prosperous ties. It is a dangerous business Frodo going out your door. You step onto the road and if you don't keep your feet there's no knowing where you might be swept off to. Especially when tariffs are involved!

Maple Leaves Unite!

Ah but the spirit of the North is not easily broken! Balzac's Coffee Roasters in a move that amuses even this old wizard has renamed the 'Americano' to the 'Canadiano.' A subtle jab but effective! And Your Independent Grocers proudly display the maple leaf a symbol of resilience and home. It reminds me of the white tree of Gondor a beacon in the darkness. Though instead of resisting Mordor they resist tariffs! 'Deeds will not be less valiant because they are unpraised.'

The Voice of the Small Folk

Corinne Pohlmann of the CFIB speaks of emotional distress and fractured relationships. It seems these tariffs are not just about money; they are about trust a precious commodity easily lost and difficult to regain. She speaks of members asking how to renegotiate contracts a sign of the deep unease these tariffs have sown. It is a pity. Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them Frodo? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. But these tariffs well let’s just say I'm judging!

Ale Woes and National Pride

Even the Liquor Control Board of Ontario has taken a stand ceasing purchases of U.S. products 'For the good of Ontario for the good of Canada!' A noble sentiment even if it means fewer California wines gracing their shelves. Though I must admit I have never been much of a wine connoisseur myself. Give me a good hearty ale any day! I suppose even Coors Light is safe so long as it is made in Canada. One simply does not walk into Mordor...or into a trade war without a good pint in hand!

The Fading Light of Soft Power

Antony Blinken speaks of the erosion of 'soft power,' a fear I too share. These tariffs intended as tools of 'hard power,' may inadvertently weaken the very influence the U.S. seeks to maintain. It is a perilous path indeed. And as Pohlmann warns even if these tariffs are lifted the damage may be irreversible. The road goes ever on and on down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone and I must follow if I can. Hopefully the road will lead to reconciliation and not further discord.
