Ares Is That You?
Greetings mortals! Wonder Woman here reporting live from the front lines of… well financial malfeasance apparently. It seems Credit Suisse Services AG thought they could pull a fast one hiding over $4 billion in offshore accounts for some of America's wealthiest. Honestly you'd think they were taking lessons from Ares himself! Deception and greed? Not on my watch!
More Like Credit Shady Am I Right?
The Department of Justice (bless their bureaucratic hearts) revealed that Credit Suisse conspired with American taxpayers to hide those billions in at least 475 offshore accounts from 2010 to 2021. That's a lot of golden lasso worthy lies! It seems these 'ultra high net worth' individuals thought they could outsmart Uncle Sam. Silly mortals don't they know truth always prevails? Even if it takes a decade and a few million dollars in fines.
Oops They Did It Again!
Here's the kicker: Credit Suisse had already signed a plea agreement back in 2014! It appears some lessons are harder to learn than others even for massive financial institutions. They pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to aid and assist in the preparation of false income tax returns. I must say even Cheetah is more subtle than this!
Singapore Sling of Deceit
But wait there's more! The DOJ found that Credit Suisse AG Singapore held undeclared accounts for U.S. persons totaling over $2 billion. They conveniently 'failed to adequately identify' the real owners or ask about any 'U.S. indicia' (whatever that means—sounds like a particularly nasty Gorgon). Honestly it's like they were trying to get caught!
Enter UBS: The Clean Up Crew
Enter UBS who acquired Credit Suisse in 2023 and found themselves knee deep in this financial swamp. To their credit (pun intended) UBS voluntarily disclosed the identified accounts and cooperated with the investigation. They claim they had 'zero tolerance for tax evasion,' which is exactly what I'd expect from someone wanting to wear the Gauntlet of Atlas without collapsing.
A Price to Pay
So what's the damage? Credit Suisse will pay about $511 million. A hefty sum indeed but hardly enough to compensate for the erosion of trust and the blatant disregard for the law. Remember my friends as Hippolyta always says 'Embrace truth and justice!' And maybe just maybe don't try to hide billions of dollars from the government. Just a thought.

I'm glad someone is watching out for the little guy, even if it's a superhero commenting on a news article.

UBS better keep a close eye on those legacy issues!

Maybe Steve Trevor can crack this case wide open.
