Fadeaway Failure UnitedHealth's 20% Airball
Alright alright settle down folks. MJ's here to break down this UnitedHealth Group situation. Twenty percent?! That's worse than my golf game after a few cigars! They’re blaming higher medical costs in their Medicare Advantage plans. Higher costs you say? Well duh! People are finally getting those knee replacements they put off during the pandemic. Can't blame 'em nobody wants to limp through life. But a 20% drop? That's like missing an open layup. Airball! And trust me I know a thing or two about clutch performance. This ain't it.
Is This Your Industry's Flu Game?
So the experts on Wall Street are saying this could be a warning sign for other companies in the Medicare Advantage game. You know like Humana Elevance and CVS. Humana took a 5% hit Elevance and CVS a bit less. Cigna though? Up almost 1%! Guess they ain’t sweating probably too busy counting their money. Listen everybody talks about avoiding pressure. But I thrive on it. You gotta be ready to take the last shot. Is this the industry’s “flu game”? Time will tell. I played my best game when I was feeling my worst so you either step up or step out of the game!
Analysts Sound the Alarm But Who's Listening?
Some analyst Ryan Langston is saying UnitedHealth “correctly foreshadowed” increasing medical costs back in 2023. So why the shock now? Seems like someone wasn't paying attention. He adds that this “will call into question” the full year outlooks for every insurer. Well duh! Captain Obvious ladies and gentlemen! It's all about preparation. You gotta know what your opponent is doing before they even make a move. And judging by this situation somebody wasn’t scouting properly. If you don't know what your opponent is doing during the game it's because they are making all the right plays.
Optum's Troubles and a Dose of DOJ Scrutiny
Now UnitedHealth is also pointing fingers at their Optum health care unit. Pharmacy benefit managers rebates formularies… sounds like a bunch of mumbo jumbo to me. But apparently something's not adding up. Plus they're dealing with a government investigation of their Medicare billing practices. Double dribble! And let's not forget the tragic passing of Brian Thompson. I don't care who you are but stuff like that has an impact. It's a tough business but you gotta stay focused. You can't be afraid to fail. That's the only way you succeed. You have to be willing to fail to win.
2026 A New Game Plan?
UnitedHealth's CEO Andrew Witty is saying they're taking action to improve results and thinks these issues are “highly addressable as we look ahead to 2026.” 2026?! That's like saying you're gonna win the championship three years from now. Talk is cheap. Show me the rings! And what did the Trump administration do? Increased reimbursement rates for Medicare Advantage insurers. A jump ball if you will lets see who gets the rebound. Because the last time I checked talk doesn't win ball games.
Game Over or Just a Time Out?
So is this the end of the line for Medicare Advantage plans? Nah. It’s just a bump in the road. Everyone faces challenges. It's how you respond that matters. You either adjust your strategy train harder and come back stronger or you give up. And giving up? That's not in my DNA. Because I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed. So keep your heads up folks. The game ain't over till the buzzer sounds!
