A Pirate's Prophecy: Skies Overfloweth!
Savvy? Boeing those landlubbers of the sky reckon that by 2030 we'll see a 40% surge in folks gallivanting about the globe in their metal contraptions! It's all laid out in their 20 year forecast released just before the Paris Airshow. They're talking 'bout needing 43,600 new airliners by 2044. Now that's a haul even I'd be impressed by! Why is the rum always gone?
Airbus Ahoy! A Rival's Rise
Of course me ol' rivals at Airbus are in the mix too. They've upped their own forecast see? Expecting a mere 43,420 jets! They claim the air transport industry will weather these trade squalls like a seasoned pirate ship. But mark my words it's not just about numbers it's about how you sail the seas – or well fly the skies! And maybe a little bit of rum too.
The Devil's in the Details: A Fleet Forecast
Now let's get down to brass tacks shall we? Boeing's prophesying about 33,300 of those skinny single aisle airliners a hefty 7,800 widebody jets 955 factory built freighters and a paltry 1,545 regional jets. Seems those 737 MAXs and Airbus's A320neos are all the rage these days. Four out of every five deliveries they say! But remember not all treasure is silver and gold mate.
Trade Winds and Turbulent Times
Hold on tight because there's a storm brewing! Boeing's scaled back its 20 year forecast for passenger traffic economic growth cargo traffic and fleet growth. Seems even they're feeling the pinch of these… ahem… 'trade tensions.' But their Vice President Darren Hulst assures us that the long term demand for air cargo will keep on truckin'. Or should I say keep on flyin'?
Pandemic's Wake: Production Predicaments!
Since that blasted Covid 19 reared its ugly head air travel's bounced back but those airplane factories? They're only half as productive as before! Seems there's a shortage of 1,500 to 2,000 airliners floating about. And don't even get me started on Boeing's production woes. A mid air blowout? Savvy? CEO Kelly Ortberg had to ditch the Paris Airshow to deal with the fallout from that Air India crash. Blimey!
Eastward Ho! The China and India Factor
But here's the kicker: 51% of the demand for new aircraft will come from growth not just replacing old rust buckets! And where's all this growth coming from? China and Southeast Asia including India! They're expected to account for half of that extra capacity. North America and Eurasia are more interested in replacing their old birds. And China? They're finally expected to resume taking deliveries of new Boeings this month. About time I say! Now where did I bury that rum?
