Not My Father's Bread Apparently
Alright so you think District 12 is tough? Try navigating the world of luxury condos and family expectations. I stumbled across this story about Jon Paul Pérez the son of Miami's 'Condo King,' Jorge Pérez. You'd think being the son of someone who builds towers taller than the Capitol's ego would mean an easy ride right? Wrong! Turns out Daddy Dearest wasn't handing out free passes. Reminds me a bit of Haymitch and his 'tough love' approach except with fewer bottles and more blueprints.
Love It or Leave It (Or Face the Arena)
Jorge the Condo King apparently carted his kids to construction sites instead of the beach. 'Either they'll love it or hate it,' he figured. Smart move honestly. Better to find out if your kids are Prim level gentle souls or Peeta style master bakers before shoving them into the arena er I mean the boardroom. Jon Paul claims he 'associated life with real estate.' Well I associated life with avoiding death so to each their own.
Earning Your Tributes...I Mean Titles
Here's where it gets interesting. Jorge insisted his kids get fancy degrees and slog it out in New York's real estate jungle for years before even considering working for him. 'I didn't want them to feel they were brought in because of their last name,' he says. Can you imagine President Snow saying that about his relatives? Me neither. It's like making Peeta win the Hunger Games without using his camouflage skills – pure unadulterated meritocracy... or at least the illusion of it.
From Rags to Slightly Less Rags
So Jon Paul puts in the hard yards works like a dog and finally gets the nod to join the family firm. But does he get to swan around in the penthouse suite? Nope! Starts in rentals. Rentals! That's like making the Girl on Fire scrub the latrines of District 12 before letting her near the fancy dresses. Eventually he makes it to the top spot CEO. Talk about a comeback kid.
Pass Down the Arrows Not Just the Gold
Jorge made sure his kids understood the 'Pérez family and Related have a reputation of doing the right thing.' It is important to pass down values along with assets and hardwork ethics. So they have a strong moral compass and that's how the company thinks. Hard work moral compass and a dash of ruthless ambition. Sounds like a winning formula even if it's not exactly 'volunteering as tribute'.
May the Odds Be Ever in Your Favor (and Your Kids' Too)
This whole story is about more than just condos and family drama. It's about how to prepare the next generation for a world that's as cutthroat as the Hunger Games minus the actual life or death situations. (Well metaphorically anyway.) If there is anything I've learned from surviving the Hunger Games twice you need to know who you are and what you are prepared to fight for.

Moral compass in real estate? Now that's a plot twist!

My dad just handed me the keys and said, 'Don't screw it up.' Wish I had this kind of mentorship.
