Move Fast and Build Things (Specifically Robotaxis)
Alright folks Zuck here. So Amazon's Zoox just opened this *massive* robotaxi factory in the Bay Area. I'm talking sprawling like 'could probably fit the Metaverse in there' sprawling. They're churning out these 'high end computers on wheels,' as Zoox CEO Aicha Evans calls them. Not selling them mind you just building a fleet. Because apparently we're all about to become passengers in a giant autonomous toaster oven. It's like remember when I said 'move fast and break things'? Well they're moving fast and building things...hopefully not breaking too many along the way. Unless of course it's Elon's Robotaxis I have no problem with that. I am sure you would prefer riding in a product built in a responsible way.
From Zero to... Ten Thousand Robotaxis a Year?
Currently Zoox is pumping out one robotaxi a day. Slow and steady wins the race? Nah they're aiming for 10,000 a year! That's like three robotaxis an hour. Look I know a thing or two about scaling (Facebook ring a bell?) and that's ambitious. But hey if they can pull it off maybe I can finally catch a ride to a board meeting without having to wear a suit. Mark's note: I really hate suits.
The Competition: Waymo vs. Zoox vs. Musk's Maybe Robotaxi
The elephant in the room or should I say the driverless minivan is Waymo. They're already doing the whole ride hailing thing. Zoox is playing catch up. And then there's Elon promising robotaxis in Austin... again. He's being 'super paranoid about safety,' which is rich coming from the guy who wants to colonize Mars. Competition is good though! It's what drives innovation... and maybe the occasional self driving car into a ditch. Hopefully not for the record. Also I can confirm if I were to make a Robotaxi it would be blue.
Las Vegas Baby! (And Eventually San Francisco... Maybe)
Zoox is launching its public rides in Vegas later this year. Smart move. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas... except for robotaxis which apparently then go to San Francisco in 2026. San Francisco to follow? That's ambitious even for Silicon Valley. But hey at least there will be less traffic maybe.
No Steering Wheel? No Problem (Probably)
Forget everything you know about cars. These Zoox things are 'carriage style,' where everyone faces each other and there's no steering wheel. No steering wheel! It's like a mobile conference room or a really awkward family road trip. I'm picturing a future where we all just sit around in these things staring at each other in silence while the AI does all the work. Sounds… familiar actually. Aicha Evans calls them 'high end computers on wheels' I mean who wouldn't want that?
Shower Time for Robotaxis (And a Well Timed Political Jab)
They even have a 'shower' to check for leaks! Seriously I wish my morning routine was this thorough. Also Zoox made a point of saying this facility is the first of its kind in the US 'a well timed move given President Donald Trump's aggressive tariff policies.' Shade. Pure shade. I approve. Gotta love a bit of political commentary with your autonomous transportation.
