It's a Me Mario! Reporting Live From the Mushroom Kingdom (err America)!
Wahoo! It's a me Mario! And I've a got some news that's gonna make your mustache curl! The FDA they're a thinking about getting rid of those crazy colors in our favorite foods! You know the ones that make Cheetos look like a Flamin' Hot fireball and Mountain Dew Baja Blast like a tropical ocean? Turns out they might not be so a good for us. Mama mia!
Toxic Soup? That Sounds Worse Than Bowser's Castle!
Apparently we've a been swimming in a 'toxic soup' of these synthetic chemicals for 50 years! That's longer than I've a been jumping on Goombas! FDA Commissioner Marty Makary says these dyes like red dye 40 are what make our cereals and chips look so a appealing. But there's a been a backlash brewing like when I accidentally eat a rotten mushroom! Bleh!
Bye Bye Bright Colors Hello Beet Juice?
So what's a gonna happen? Well the FDA wants food companies to switch to natural alternatives. Think beet juice for red carrot juice for… well you get the picture! Makary he's a even said 'For companies that are currently using petroleum based red dye try watermelon juice or beet juice. For companies currently combining petroleum based yellow chemical and red dyes together try carrot juice.' Maybe Froot Loops will soon be 'Root' Loops? Haha!
Game Over for Red Dye 40 Yellow Dye 5 Yellow Dye 6 Blue Dye 1 Blue Dye 2 and Green Dye 2?
And get this! They're a talking about phasing out red dye 40 yellow dye 5 yellow dye 6 blue dye 1 blue dye 2 and green dye 2 blue dye 2 and even red dye 3! That's a a lot of colors going down the drain! It's a gonna be tough for companies like PepsiCo and General Mills. It's a like trying to beat Bowser with only a Super Leaf – tricky!
More Hyperactive Than Me After a Super Star?!
The FDA says these artificial colors might be making kids more hyperactive like me after I grab a Super Star! 'The F in FDA stands for food,' Makary said. 'Now there's no one ingredient that accounts for the child chronic disease epidemic. And let's be honest taking petroleum based food dyes out of the food supply is not a silver bullet that will instantly make America's children healthy but it is one important step.' They even cited a Lancet study that agrees! Maybe this is a a good thing even if it means my snacks won't be so a colorful. As Kennedy said removing artificial dyes from the food system is an urgent priority of the Trump administration.
Wa hoo! Reformulation Time!?
So what does this mean for you and me? Probably blander looking snacks but maybe healthier ones too! And one company McCormick is a already celebrating! They're a helping companies tweak their formulas just like I tweak my jump to reach the flagpole. This is a a big change but hey 'Here we go!' Let's hope it's a a change for the better! It's a me Mario signing off! Remember 'It's a me!' so go get some healthy naturally colored snacks!
