Up Up and Away... With Apple's Secrets?
Greetings citizens of Earth! Your friendly neighborhood Superman here reporting live from the Fortress of Solitude (mostly because Lois is hogging the Daily Planet's computers). It seems Apple that little company that makes shiny gadgets is experiencing a bit of a kryponite moment. They're accusing a former engineer Di Liu of downloading a galaxy of confidential files before rocketing off to Snap. Honestly you'd think they'd have better security. Lex Luthor would be proud... or maybe he's behind it all! Dun dun duuuun!.
A Fortress Breached: The Alleged Data Heist
According to the lawsuit Mr. Liu allegedly saved 'thousands of documents' to his personal cloud accounts in his final days at Apple which contained product design and supply chain information. Sounds like someone was planning a little 'office supplies' run if you catch my drift. This is worse than the time I accidentally laser visioned Jimmy Olsen's lunch. At least I apologized! And bought him a new sandwich. Filled with lead. For his health naturally.
Secret Agent Man: The Snap Connection
Now here's where it gets interesting. Apple claims Liu didn't exactly shout from the rooftops that he was joining Snap a rival in the smart glasses game. This meant Apple didn't cut off his access giving him a 'customary two week transition period' to shall we say 'transition' some data. I've seen sneakier moves from Bizarro and that's saying something! Snap however is playing it cool stating they have no reason to believe the allegations are related to Liu's conduct at Snap.
Apple Bites Back: Seeking Justice (and Deleted Files)
Apple feeling betrayed like I felt when Lois first preferred that Clark Kent guy is seeking damages and wants a forensic examiner to scour Liu's devices. They want those secrets erased faster than I can fly around the world backwards to turn back time. This wouldn't be the first time Apple has gone after former employees. They're like the Kryptonian version of the legal system: swift decisive and occasionally leaving a fiery crater in someone's career.
History Repeats Itself: Apple's Litigious Streak
Apple's lawyers are pretty upset stating "Worse still the review of Mr. Liu's Apple issued work laptop also shows that while maintaining access to Apple's Proprietary Information under false pretenses he used his Apple credentials to exfiltrate thousands of documents containing Proprietary Information from Apple's secure file storage systems". This isn't Apple's first rodeo. They've sued former employees before for leaking info even settling with one over providing information to a journalist. They also sued a chip startup staffed by former Apple semiconductor employees over its intellectual property and settled in 2024. It seems like Apple's secret weapon is their legal team not their next gen tech...or so Lex wants you to believe!
Stay Tuned Folks! Same Bat Time Same Bat Channel!
So will Liu face the Phantom Zone? Will Snap emerge unscathed? Only time will tell. Until then this is Superman reminding you to always lock your Fortress of Solitude and maybe just maybe don't download thousands of files before switching jobs. It's just not a good look. "Truth Justice and the American Way!"... and protecting trade secrets apparently. Over and out!
