A Licence to Scrape?
Right let's get one thing straight: I'm Bond James Bond and even I know when a deal smells fishy. Word on the street – or rather the Thames – is that the UK government's got a twinkle in its eye for some rather dodgy dealings involving AI and copyright. Seems they're considering letting tech giants have a free for all with copyrighted content to train their AI models. As if we haven't seen enough villains trying to control the world!
The Usual Suspects (and Some Celeb Musicians)
Now usually I'm dealing with SPECTRE but this time the enemy is a bit more... abstract. But never underestimate the enemy no matter how well dressed are they? Turns out Elton John Dua Lipa and a whole host of other musical luminaries are raising hell about this. They've penned a rather strongly worded letter to Prime Minister Starmer urging him to back an amendment that would protect their work. I must say even Goldfinger would be impressed by the amount of gold records at stake here.
Opt Out? More Like Opt Outrage!
The government's proposal is that artists would have to *opt out* of having their work scraped by these AI behemoths. Honestly it's like asking me to opt out of a perfectly mixed martini – shaken not stirred of course. Preposterous! These musicians are right to be miffed; it's essentially giving away their hard earned creations to the highest bidder. Q would have a field day rigging up some sort of anti AI scraping device I'm sure.
Kidron's Gambit
Enter Beeban Kidron a lawmaker with a plan. She's proposed an amendment that would force these tech giants to be upfront about which copyrighted works they've used. Transparency you see. A novel concept in the world of espionage – and apparently AI development. If you want my professional advice trust nobody. She wants a proper licensing system which frankly sounds like a much better deal than this 'opt out' nonsense. Let's hope she is not a wolf in sheep's clothing!
A View to a License
The government of course is playing it coy. They say they want both the creative industries and the AI firms to "flourish." It is a dangerous game. But here's the thing: you can't have both if you're robbing Peter to pay Paul. You can be sure that the government are not always telling the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I'll be keeping a close eye on this that's for sure. One never knows when a seemingly innocuous policy change can lead to global domination – or at the very least a really bad pop song.
The Name's Bond Ethical Bond
So there you have it. The fate of the UK's creative industries hanging in the balance all thanks to a bunch of algorithms and corporate greed. Let's hope our lawmakers do the right thing. After all as I always say "The world is not enough," but a fair deal for artists is a damn good start. Now if you'll excuse me I have a martini to attend to. Shaken not stirred. And definitely not scraped by AI.

Finally, someone is standing up to these tech companies!
