The Muggle President's Appliance Affront
My dearest readers it appears the Muggle world is once again embroiled in a peculiar predicament. One Donald Trump a figure of considerable…volume…and influence in the American Muggle government has taken umbrage with the humble household appliance. Dishwashers washing machines light bulbs showerheads and even *toilets* have incurred his presidential displeasure. 'Of course,' I thought sipping my Earl Grey 'it does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live efficiently!' It seems Mr. Trump believes these devices are being unfairly hobbled by government regulations rendering them less effective and more expensive. A curious claim indeed. It reminds me of Mr. Filch perpetually complaining about the self cleaning spells on the Hogwarts toilets... utterly unfounded of course.
Executive Orders and Water Pressure Woes
Since reclaiming his seat in the White House Mr. Trump has translated his appliance angst into action. He issued an executive order a Muggle equivalent of a particularly forceful decree targeting a myriad of energy production regulations including those governing our dear appliances. Furthermore he has penned a memorandum – a very serious bit of parchment I assure you – titled 'Rescission of Useless Water Pressure Standards.' One can only imagine the implications! Perhaps he envisions a return to the days of dribbling showerheads and toilets that require three flushes? Such inefficiency! As I always say 'Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak!'... or in this case perhaps 'Inefficient! Wasteful! Nonsensical! Trump!'
The Department of Energy's Deregulatory Dance
Not to be outdone the Department of Energy (a rather grand title even by wizarding standards) has announced plans to eliminate or modify 47 federal regulations claiming they drive up costs and lower the quality of life for the American people. Many of these rules stem from the Energy Policy and Conservation Act (EPCA) a decades old law mandating energy efficiency and water conservation standards for appliances. One wonders if Mr. Trump realizes that even wizards benefit from energy efficiency. After all a reduced electric bill means more Galleons for Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans!
Energy Star's Potential Extinction
As if that weren't enough the Environmental Protection Agency is contemplating the elimination of the Energy Star program. This popular initiative with its familiar blue labeling helps consumers make informed choices about energy efficient appliances. It's a voluntary system mind you akin to a House Elf choosing to wear tea towels... except in this case it actually benefits everyone! Removing Energy Star would be akin to removing the Sorting Hat – a potential disaster! How will Muggles possibly navigate the labyrinthine world of washing machines without its guidance?
Resistance Support and the Specter of Lawsuits
Unsurprisingly Mr. Trump's actions have been met with a mixed bag of responses. Consumer protection groups and appliance manufacturers are raising their wands in protest while deregulation enthusiasts cheer him on. Legal challenges are brewing threatening to turn this appliance imbroglio into a full blown courtroom cauldron. It seems the Muggles are learning that even the simplest of household objects can become instruments of political division. 'We must all face the choice between what is right and what is easy,' I often tell my students. In this case choosing energy efficiency seems decidedly *right*.
Hope Flickers Like a Well Regulated Light Bulb
Despite the brewing storm there is a glimmer of hope. Many industry groups and retailers support energy efficiency. Legal precedents exist to prevent backsliding on established standards. And most importantly consumers themselves overwhelmingly favor energy efficient appliances. Perhaps in the end common sense will prevail and the Muggles will continue to enjoy the benefits of well regulated appliances. As I always say 'Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times if one only remembers to turn on the light'… preferably a highly efficient one of course!
