Ay Caramba! The Plot Thickens Like My Famous Gazpacho!
Hola mis amigos! Puss in Boots here reporting live from… well not exactly the front lines of battle but a political skirmish that's juicier than a stolen cream puff! President Trump in his infinite (and sometimes perplexing) wisdom nominated a certain Ed Martin to be the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. Now usually I'm all for justice but this case is more tangled than my whiskers after a midnight yarn ball brawl. This is a serious issue so I shall put on my serious face... *dramatic pause*.
Senator Tillis Sharpens His Claws!
Enter Senator Thom Tillis a Republican from North Carolina and seemingly a man who values order more than a comfortable cat nap! He has declared with the sternness of a wet cat that he will *not* support Mr. Martin. *Gasp!* Why you ask? Because of Martin's views on those rascals involved in the January 6th Capitol riot. It appears that Senator Tillis feels that anyone who dared to breach the sacred halls of democracy deserves a stint in the slammer. And he’s got more backbone than a plate of paella!
A Pardon? ¡No Way José!
Now it seems Mr. Martin has a soft spot (or perhaps a strategic one) for some of those January 6th defendants. He believes some were 'over prosecuted'. *¡Dios mio!* But Senator Tillis seems to have little patience for such notions especially in the very district where all the ruckus occurred. He has said that were Martin to be U.S. attorney elsewhere he'd likely approve. 'Whether it's 30 days or three years is debatable but I have no tolerance for anybody who entered the building on January the sixth and that's probably where most of the friction was,' he said.
Committee Cat astrophe!
The Senator's decision may be a fatal blow for Martin's hopes! With Tillis against him Martin can only hope for a tie vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee which means his nomination will likely not move forward. It's a political stalemate worthy of a dramatic sword fight but without the fabulous costumes!
Grassley's Gambit: A Senator's 'Purr ogative'?
Even Chuck Grassley the committee chairman is playing his cards close to his chest refusing to put Martin's nomination on the agenda. He wants nominees who have the votes. 'I want the president's nominees to be successful and that means we put on people that have the votes,' Grassley said. It seems even he believes the situation is grim. *Sad Puss in Boots eyes*.
The Clock is Ticking!
Now Mr. Martin is currently serving as interim U.S. attorney but his time is running out faster than a mouse in a marathon! His term expires on May 20th leaving many to wonder if he'll get the permanent gig. Will he stay or will he go? *Dramatic music swells* Only time (and a few Senate votes) will tell! But if you ask this gato the odds are looking about as good as a hairless cat winning a beauty pageant.
