Even a Man of Steel needs a financial shield! BlackRock suggests diversification is key in today's turbulent markets. Here's how to build a portfolio stronger than a locomotive, faster than a speeding bullet, and able to leap tall recessions in a single bound!
Even a Man of Steel needs a financial shield! BlackRock suggests diversification is key in today's turbulent markets. Here's how to build a portfolio stronger than a locomotive, faster than a speeding bullet, and able to leap tall recessions in a single bound!

Kryptonite for Your Finances: The 60/40 Trap

Greetings citizens of Earth! It's your friendly neighborhood Superman here to talk about something almost as important as truth justice and the American way: your investments! BlackRock those brilliant minds are saying the old 60/40 portfolio (60% stocks 40% bonds) might as well be made of Kryptonite these days. Remember the good old days when stocks and bonds danced a sweet negative correlation tango? Now it seems they're more like Lex Luthor and I – constantly at odds and frequently causing trouble!

Faster Than a Speeding Recession: Why Diversify?

The US economy hiccuped in the first quarter and the market's been doing the jitterbug ever since. Treasury yields are flat! Gargi Chaudhuri from BlackRock astutely points out that this market turbulence has folks asking "What ELSE can I do?" Well fear not! Like having a Fortress of Solitude stocked with gadgets diversifying your portfolio is about having backup plans. It is about making sure you are not caught off guard. When I see Earth in peril I don't just use my heat vision. I use my super strength my super speed my super breath... you get the idea. Different tools for different jobs!

Leaping Tall Buildings of Debt: Fixed Income Focus

Speaking of tools let's talk bonds. BlackRock suggests focusing on the 3 to 7 year maturity range emphasizing the 'income of fixed income.' Think of it as Lois Lane's unwavering support even when I'm battling Doomsday. Steady reliable and always there when you need it. They also suggest a sprinkle of inflation linked bonds to protect against the rising cost of a Daily Planet coffee (which let's be honest is a supervillainous price these days!).

Stronger Than a Locomotive: International Intrigue

Don't be a Metropolis centric investor! Just like I travel the globe saving the world your portfolio should have some international flair. BlackRock suggests adding international stocks to your portfolio. The exact amount depends on your super powers (ahem risk tolerance) but most advisors agree folks are underweight international. Think of it as learning to speak Kryptonian – it opens up a whole new world of possibilities!

Able to Bend Steel: Add Some Shine (and Gold!)

Here's where things get interesting! BlackRock suggests adding 'sleeves of diversifiers' like gold. Now I'm not talking about the kind Lex Luthor hoards. This gold is a portfolio superhero especially when growth slows down and inflation rises. It's like having a Yellow Sun lamp in your Fortress of Solitude – it just gives you that extra oomph when you need it!

It's Not An 'S': Liquid Alternatives & The High Cost of Being a Superhero

Finally BlackRock mentions 'liquid alternatives,' strategies designed to have a low correlation to the S&P 500. These strategies through the power of financial engineering will 'significantly improve your portfolio outcomes.' BlackRock even has funds to help. Be warned however that these funds don't come cheap! With expense ratios ranging from 1.09% to 1.6% they are going to cost you. Still it's all about finding the right tool for the job. Just remember diversifying isn't for everyone. If you are new to investing consider an ETF that handles everything for you (like iShares Core 60/40 Balanced Allocation ETF (AOR) ). After all even Superman needs a day off!
