Up Up and Awaaaay... Into the World of Image Recognition!
Greetings citizens of Earth! It's your friendly neighborhood Superman here to report on something that's caught even *my* X ray vision's attention. OpenAI those clever minds over there have cooked up something new. They're calling it o3 and get this it can actually 'think' with pictures! As if I didn't have enough competition for visual processing with Lois already.
Sketches Diagrams and the Pursuit of Truth (and AI Dominance)
Apparently o3 can analyze even your worst doodles and diagrams. I'm talking the kind of sketches that would make even Lex Luthor scratch his bald head in confusion. They've also got a smaller model o4 mini for those times when you need AI speed without the full blown Brainiac level processing power. It's like having a super powered sidekick only it's not Krypto. But I have been thinking about teaching Krypto how to code imagine the possibilities!
From Text to Pictures: OpenAI's Generative Leap
Ever since ChatGPT became the talk of the town OpenAI has been on a roll. They're not just about text anymore; they're diving headfirst into images voice and videos. You could say they're trying to become the complete package a one stop shop for all your AI needs. It's a bird! It's a plane! It's OpenAI trying to do everything at once! They are in race with Google Anthropic and Elon Musk's xAI looks like things are getting heated up like a volcano!
Independently Solving Problems with all ChatGPT Tools
OpenAI is claiming that "For the first time our reasoning models can independently use all ChatGPT tools — web browsing Python image understanding and image generation," this is going to help them solve complex and multi step problems. OpenAI says that o3 and o4 mini are its first AI models that can 'think with images'. According to OpenAI "they don't just see an image they can integrate visual information directly into the reasoning chain."
Naming Conventions: Even Superman Gets Confused
Now about those names: o3 and o4 mini. I mean seriously? Even *I* have trouble keeping track and I can remember the entire genetic code of Krypton! I think it is high time we address the elephant in the room. The naming conventions have become more and more confusing even the CEO acknowledged that. The CEO Sam Altman joked that "how about we fix our model naming by this summer and everyone gets a few more months to make fun of us (which we very much deserve) until then?"
Safety First! Or Is It?
Of course with great power comes great responsibility... oh wait wrong superhero! But the sentiment still applies. OpenAI claims these models have been 'stress tested,' but some folks are raising eyebrows about their safety precautions. They even mentioned they might loosen their safety requirements if a competitor gets too risky. Hmmm sounds like a recipe for disaster if you ask me maybe even as disastrous as Lex Luthor getting his hands on a Kryptonite powered suit. I will have to keep an eye on that!
