Up Up and Away... From Governmental Overreach!
Greetings citizens of Earth! Superman here reporting for truth justice and the American way… which apparently is currently being debated at Harvard University! It seems the Trump administration in a move that would make Lex Luthor proud has decided to freeze a cool $2.2 billion in grants to the Ivy League institution. Why you ask? Well according to sources at the Daily Planet it's because of concerns about antisemitism on campus and Harvard's refusal to kowtow to demands regarding its Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) programs. Frankly even I'm having trouble seeing through this lead plated plan.
Harvard's Fortress of Solitude (and Principles)
President Alan Garber channeling his inner Jor El has stood firm stating that no government should dictate what universities teach. "Although some of the demands outlined by the government are aimed at combating antisemitism the majority represent direct governmental regulation of the 'intellectual conditions' at Harvard," Garber said. You tell 'em Mr. President! It’s like trying to tell me how to fly – I think I’ve got that covered.
DEI: The Kryptonite of the Current Administration?
The administration's demands are quite the list including the elimination of DEI programs and screening international students for 'hostility to American values.' It sounds like they're looking for a 'super' student but even I with all my x ray vision can't see how that's going to solve anything. We wouldn't want to create Bizarro students now would we?
Not So Fast Trump: Harvard Defends Itself!
Harvard not one to back down from a fight (except maybe against Lex Luthor) responded with a resounding "The university will not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights." Someone's been reading my press releases I see! This isn't just about Harvard; it's about any private university allowing itself to be taken over by the federal government. It's like Braniac trying to take over a mainframe computer a risk to not only academic freedom but a threat to national security! It must be stopped!
The Economic Impact: A Super Sized Problem
Garber warns that losing this funding risks not only the health and well being of millions but also the economic security of our nation. Federal funding has led to "groundbreaking innovations across a wide range of medical engineering and scientific fields." It's like cutting off the power to my Fortress of Solitude! Where will I keep all my souvenirs from vanquished supervillains? Seriously though such innovations are crucial to our future.
Hur's Got Their Back!
Adding a twist to this saga is Robert Hur the special counsel who investigated former President Biden and William Burck an ethics advisor for the Trump Organization both are defending Harvard. Yes folks even those on opposite sides of the aisle can agree on one thing: Academic freedom is essential. Is this a dream? Am I flying backwards around the Earth to turn back time?! Maybe. But I'm proud Harvard hired experienced Attorneys to lead the charge. Until next time this is Superman signing off! Remember stay vigilant stay informed and always fight for what's right. And maybe wear a cape. Capes are cool.
