Preposterous! Another Giant Leap for Mankind…Kind Of
As a theoretical physicist I Sheldon Cooper Ph.D. am uniquely qualified to comment on this… development. Joby Aviation a company dedicated to creating those flying contraptions Leonard dreams about (electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft or eVTOLs for the uninitiated) has received a sizable monetary infusion from Toyota. $250 million to be precise! Now I understand that money is a social construct but even I recognize that’s a lot of comic books! This substantial transaction has caused Joby Aviation's stock to experience what one might call a… significant upward trajectory. It jumped 28%. I’d like to see Leonard jump 28% after eating some Thai food.
Penny's Purse vs. Toyota's Pockets: A Tale of Two Economies
This $250 million is merely a portion of a previously declared agreement where Toyota pledged to invest a grand total of $500 million. The stated objective? To facilitate the certification and subsequent commercial production of these electric air taxis. While Penny might not comprehend the intricacies of venture capital even she can appreciate that half a billion dollars is enough to buy a lot of cheesecake. And let's be honest cheesecake is a universal language.
"Bazinga!" The Toyota Synergy
JoeBen Bevirt the CEO and founder of Joby Aviation made a statement! A statement I might add that highlights the symbiotic relationship between Joby and Toyota. Apparently Toyota's involvement is already proving beneficial in streamlining manufacturing processes and optimizing design. This is good news! I hate inefficiency. It's almost as bad as people not using coasters.
A Mutual Commitment: Deeper Integration and Next Generation Travel
According to the press release this deal reinforces the 'mutual commitment to deepening integration and delivering next generation travel to global market.' While I typically refrain from hyperbole this sounds suspiciously like they're trying to build flying cars. Flying cars people! Sheldon Cooper always believed in flying cars. Now where's my Doppler Effect costume?
From Helicopters to Hope: The eVTOL Promise
eVTOLs for those who still haven't caught up take off and land in a manner analogous to helicopters. This according to the developers can alleviate the scourge of traffic congestion and reduce emissions. So theoretically less time spent in cars with Leonard and a slightly less polluted atmosphere. A double win if I do say so myself. However I still maintain that teleportation is the superior solution.
United Airlines Takes Flight (With Archer): A Competitor Emerges!
Joby Aviation isn't the only player in this electric air taxi game. United Airlines has teamed up with Archer Aviation to launch their own airport air taxi service. Competition! It's like a game of Settlers of Catan but with real money and significantly higher stakes. One might say it is getting quite heated! Perhaps I should invest. Or better yet invent my own superior flying machine. It will of course be powered by dark matter.
