The Numbers Tell a Story
Ah numbers. Those curious little symbols that Muggle financiers pore over with the intensity of a potions master brewing a particularly volatile concoction. HP I'm told has recently released its second quarter results. Revenue bless its heart managed to exceed expectations like a particularly persistent Bludger evading capture. However alas earnings per share fell short. As I always say 'Differences of habit and language are nothing at all if our aims are identical and our hearts are open.' Perhaps analysts and HP were simply speaking different numerical dialects!
Tariffs: The Unforgivable Curse of Commerce
Now a particularly nasty curse has been placed upon these financial figures: tariffs courtesy of President Trump. These tariffs it seems have cast a shadow over HP's profitability rather like a Dementor sucking the joy out of a Quidditch match. Shares I hear took a nosedive a rather ungraceful tumble reminiscent of Neville Longbottom's early attempts at flying. HP's net income has shrunk a fate no company desires especially when it involves less gold in the coffers.
CEO Lores: A Man with a Plan
But fear not! HP's CEO Enrique Lores appears to be a man of action or at least a man with a plan which is nearly as good. He's been quoted as saying they're 'accelerating the expansion of their manufacturing footprint.' A bit like Hermione Granger revising for exams only with factories instead of books. Production in Vietnam Thailand India Mexico and even the U.S. is on the rise. Mr. Lores has been a busy wizard indeed!
The Great China Escape
By June nearly all products sold in North America it seems will be built outside of China. A strategic retreat perhaps? Or a clever maneuver to outflank the tariff monster? As I've often said 'It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies but just as much to stand up to our friends.' HP seems to be standing up to both trade pressures and geographical constraints.
Mitigation Magic: Expecto Patronum!
Lores assured that they expect to 'fully mitigate the increased trade related costs by Q4.' One hopes this mitigation is more effective than Gilderoy Lockhart's attempts at memory charms. Time as they say will tell whether HP's efforts bear fruit or whether they end up with a handful of Fizzing Whizbees instead of solid galleons.
Final Thoughts: The Future As Always Is Murky
So what does all this mean? Well the future as always is murky even with a Pensieve at hand. HP faces challenges to be sure but also demonstrates a resilience that would make even a Hufflepuff proud. As I also profoundly said "It is our choices Harry that show what we truly are far more than our abilities." And the story of HP is still being written one quarterly report at a time.
