De Ja Vu All Over Again
Hello world! It's me Novak Djokovic your favorite tennis philosopher and truth seeker. Today we're not talking about my backhand or gluten free diets but something far more serious: Boeing's latest 'Oops we crashed planes but here's some cash' settlement. It appears the U.S. Justice Department is giving Boeing a 'non prosecution agreement' – basically a golden ticket out of jail. Reminds me of when I tried to enter Australia that one time... only this situation is much more grave and sensitive to make a joke about. But let's be real how many times can you double fault before someone says 'Maybe you need to practice more?'
Advantage: Corporate Giants
The article says Boeing gets to avoid being labeled a 'felon.' Oh the horror! Imagine the social stigma at the next corporate gala. All jokes aside 346 people died in those 737 Max crashes. Families have been begging for a trial for someone to take responsibility. But no apparently avoiding 'uncertainty and litigation risk' is more important than you know justice. It's like saying 'Sorry about your loss but think of Boeing's stock price!' I am no longer trying to be funny.
Show Me The Money...Again
So what does this deal entail? Boeing will 'pay or invest' over $1.1 billion. Sounds like a lot right? Well $487.2 million is a 'criminal fine' (minus the $243.6 million they already paid – talk about a discount!) $444.5 million for a victims fund and $445 million for 'compliance safety and quality programs.' The lack of quality programs is the main reason these aircrafts were grounded to begin with. How did we end up here?
Sweetheart Deals and Jedi Mind Tricks
The article mentions a former Boeing pilot pulling a 'jedi mind trick' on regulators. I've faced tough opponents on the court but nothing beats a good old fashioned regulatory loophole. And let's not forget the 2021 settlement that was conveniently set to expire just days after a door panel blew off a 737 Max 9 earlier this year. The timing is impeccable! All that is happening with our lives and the powers that be are only thinking about money! Can you believe it?!
Is This Justice Or Just PR?
Lawyers for the victims' families are rightfully outraged. They call it a 'slap on the wrist.' Considering Boeing's lucrative military contracts and future presidential jet deals it sounds more like a gentle pat on the back. Are we prioritizing corporate profits over human lives? Is justice just a game where the rich always win? I am seriously asking the question here people.
The Moral of the Story
As someone who strives for excellence and fair play even when facing questionable line calls I have to say this Boeing situation leaves a sour taste in my mouth. It's a reminder that accountability shouldn't have a price tag and that justice delayed is justice denied. Until next time stay grounded both literally and figuratively. And maybe avoid flying Boeing for a bit just to be safe that is my little advice. The world will need time to recover from this...
