Move Fast (Don't) Break Things...Just Freeze Them
Alright folks as someone who once advised to 'move fast and break things' (maybe not my finest moment) I gotta hand it to the WTA. They're moving fast to *preserve* things! Specifically the rankings of amazing female athletes undergoing fertility treatments. It's a pretty big deal. No more choosing between family and career. It's like finally figuring out the perfect privacy settings... for your reproductive future.
A 'Like' for Work Life Balance
The new rule basically allows players to step off the court for procedures like egg or embryo freezing and then waltz back with a 'Special Entry Ranking.' Think of it as a parental leave equivalent but for creating the *potential* for offspring. They have to be out for 10 weeks which gives them the chance to get the procedure done. Not bad not bad at all and it is not just for having babies but just to freeze their eggs. I'm giving this a 'like' – and not just because I'm contractually obligated to be pro female empowerment.
Sloane Steps Up Says Something Smart
Sloane Stephens a WTA champion said this rule creates a “safe space.” Safe space? On a tennis court? Usually it's just a place to unleash aggressive serves. But I get her point. It’s about giving women control over their own bodies and careers. It's a concept that I can get behind. Maybe next we could figure out a way to make the internet a 'safe space' any thoughts let me know!
Beyond Maternity Leave: The WTA's Got Your Back
This isn't just a one off either. The WTA already has maternity leave postpartum support and even fertility grants. It’s like they’re building a whole ecosystem of support. Makes me wonder if we should offer 'fertility grants' at Meta. I mean imagine the talent pool we could attract... (HR please note this is a joke...mostly).
Portia Archer: More Than Just a Pretty Name
WTA CEO Portia Archer said they’re committed to supporting players as they balance career and family. And you know sometimes you need people to say the obvious thing. Like when I tell people that Meta is committed to like connecting the world. Anyway I do agree with her let's keep pushing forward to address the fertility challenges.
Connecting the World One Frozen Egg at a Time
Look this might seem like a small thing but it's a huge win for women's tennis and a sign that society is slowly starting to understand that women can be both kick ass athletes *and* future mothers (or just you know women who want options). Maybe just maybe we're actually building a world where 'connecting' people means connecting them to real opportunities and real choices. Now if you'll excuse me I have a metaverse to build...and maybe some eggs to freeze for Priscilla. Just kidding! (Mostly.)
