Here We Go Again! A Cyberattack Story
It's a me Mario reporting live from the Mushroom Kingdom... wait no it's actually about some messy business with UnitedHealth! Last year they had a big whoopsie – a cyberattack on their Change Healthcare unit that was bigger than Bowser's ego! Apparently 190 million Americans got their data mixed up like spaghetti. But don't a worry! At the time they were all smiles and sunshine offering no interest loans to help those poor doctors who were left spinning like they'd just eaten a Super Mushroom.
The Plot Thickens! (Like Mama's Meatballs)
Fast forward to now and it's a completely different story! UnitedHealth or should I say their financial muscle Optum is playing hardball. They're demanding repayment faster than I can eat a plate of pasta! Some doctors are getting bills for hundreds of thousands of dollars and they want it 'immediatamente!' They're even threatening to withhold payments! It's like they're saying 'You wanna get paid? You gotta jump through our hoops first! Wahoo!'
Doctor's Dilemma! (More Like a Koopa Shell acking)
Take Dr. Christine Meyer for example. She's a Pennsylvania doctor who got hit hard by the cyberattack. She's saying 'I'm a not in a position to pay!' She even got a repayment notice with the wrong practice name and amount! Talk about a glitch in the system! UnitedHealth's CEO Andrew Witty even said in a Senate hearing that doctors wouldn't have to repay until they said their cash flow was back to normal. But Dr. Meyer says 'That's a not what happened!'
Withholding Payment! (Just Like Stealing Stars!)
And get this: UnitedHealth is already starting to withhold payments from some practices. It's like Bowser stealing all the stars from the Mushroom Kingdom! One doctor in New Jersey noticed a line on their insurance paperwork that says 'UnitedHealthcare is withholding payment for Optum.' Can you believe it? It's like they're turning into Wario greedy and selfish!
No One is Happy!
Another doctor Purvi Parikh an allergist and immunologist in New York said it's been a 'very frustrating experience dealing with Optum.' Her practice got $440,000 in funding assistance but now they're getting the same hard press for repayment. It's like she said they are holding future payments ransom which is unacceptable. I am just happy I live in the Mushroom Kingdom.
What Is Going to Happen Next!?
So what's the moral of the story? Well folks it seems like even in the real world sometimes you have to jump through a lot of hoops to get your happily ever after. Let's hope these doctors can find a power up to help them get through this mess. Maybe a Super Star to make them invincible! 'It's a me Mario!'
Mbizo
Hopefully there will be some regulation that forces UnitedHealth to change their practices.
