A Monumental Day? Or Just Another Arena?

Well folks looks like the WNBA thinks it's time for a bit of a revolution... or at least a renovation. They're adding three new teams in Cleveland Detroit and Philadelphia. Cathy Engelbert their version of President Snow (hopefully less…you know…poisonous) is calling it a "truly monumental day." Monumental for whom exactly? The people who get to sell overpriced concessions maybe? But hey at least it’s more jobs for the athletes so I’m trying to stay optimistic like when Peeta thought he could charm the Gamemakers with a loaf of burnt bread.

Cleveland Rocks (Again?)

Cleveland's getting a team in 2028. They had the Cleveland Rockers way back when but apparently low attendance made the owner pull the plug faster than I can shoot an arrow. Nic Barlage some bigwig from the Rock Entertainment Group is all excited. Let's just hope they don't become a cautionary tale. It's like they forgot about the last time. Some people never learn do they? The arena better have enough space in case there's a victor's tour or you know anything...

Detroit's Back in the Game (After a Two Decade Nap)

Detroit's getting a team in 2029. They used to have the Detroit Shock. Three championships high attendance... then POOF! Gone to Tulsa. Arn Tellem the vice chairman of the Detroit Pistons is saying it's “much bigger than basketball." Maybe it's about selling more merchandise? I hope the fans are ready to embrace them or else we might have another District 13 situation on our hands. That’s sarcasm obviously. I would never wish District 13 on anyone…

Philly's Got an Obligation

Philadelphia gets a team in 2030. Josh Harris some fancy managing partner says bringing the WNBA to Philly "wasn't just a nice to have it was an obligation." An obligation? To who? I thought the only obligations were to survive. Maybe he just wants some good PR. Hopefully the team does well and doesn't become a career... Oh who am I kidding.

Franchise Fees: May the Highest Bidder Win!

Engelbert is keeping mum about how much these teams have to cough up to join the party but she did mention they're at "historic levels." Historic for whom exactly? Those owners are paying more for the privilege than I did risking my life in the arena. But hey at least it's someone else's money. But is it a price to pay for something that could die? I don't know the answer to that one.

Will These Teams Thrive? Only Time Will Tell

So three new teams more opportunities and hopefully more fans. Let's just hope these teams don't go the way of so many hopes and dreams in Panem. Remember "Hope it is the only thing stronger than fear." Let's just hope that's true for the WNBA. And if they need a mascot I'm available. I hear the Mockingjay is pretty popular...
