May the Odds Be Ever in Our Favor... Or Not?

Well folks it seems even President Snow – I mean Trump – has decided to play a different game for a while. Word on the street or rather on the high seas is that Maersk that big shot Danish shipping company saw its shares jump like Peeta when he's trying to avoid a mutt. Apparently Trump put a 90 day pause on some tariffs but hold your horses District 12 – it doesn't apply to China. So still a lot of hunger games going on just with slightly different rules.

China's Still in the Arena?

Speaking of China Trump’s been waving his hand again boosting tariffs on their goods to a whopping 125%. He mumbled something about “lack of respect,” which frankly sounds like my dating life after the Quarter Quell. The good news? Maersk's shares were up like when you manage to snag the last loaf of bread at the market. The bad news? It feels like we are still in the arena just with global economies as tributes.

Is This Really Good News?

Maersk themselves said this whole tariff shebang was “significant” and “not good news.” Reminds me of when Haymitch sobered up just enough to tell me the truth about the Games. They’re playing the waiting game seeing how countries retaliate negotiate or just throw their hands up in despair. Sounds like a normal Tuesday in Panem.

The Fine Print: It's Always There!

Remember that time I thought I was safe after winning the Games? Yeah me too. Maersk also warned that Trump's tariffs on Mexico Canada and China would cause prices to jump. It's like the Capitol designing the arena to always have a twist – just when you think you're out of the woods BAM! Tracker Jackers.

Hope... Or Just Another Mockingjay?

Some fancy pants strategist at Morningstar named Michael Field says this tariff pause is a “big positive.” He thinks the worst case scenario is off the table like finally finding a decent bakery in District 12! But he also admits this trade war shadow is still looming. Seems we're not out of the woods yet folks. Still as my sister Prim always said "Hope. It is the only thing stronger than fear."

What Does It All Mean?

So what does it all mean for us regular folks? Well keep your eyes on the prices and maybe stock up on some Everdeen family stew. If this trade war escalates we might all be wishing we had a good hunting bow and a lifetime supply of groosling. For now just remember: survive. That's what I always tell myself. And maybe just maybe this peace offering from President...Snow might bring us a little reprieve. But don't count on it. The Games are never really over are they?
