From Streaming Dreams to AI Schemes?
Well isn't this just dandy? Seems like even in the brave new world faces from the past keep popping up. Reed Hastings the big cheese from Netflix is now cozying up with Anthropic that AI company everyone's jabbering about. Remember when all we had to worry about was whether Gale or Peeta would win my heart? Now it's whether these AI gizmos are going to turn us into Avoxes. Hastings apparently was handpicked by some 'Long Term Benefit Trust' – sounds suspiciously like a Capitol committee to me.
The Capitol… I Mean Tech Sector Shuffle
Apparently Hastings has been bouncing around the tech world like a rogue hovercraft from Microsoft to Facebook – sorry Meta. They say he brings 'extensive experience' and knows how to make tech benefit society. Right. Like the Capitol benefited the districts. But hey maybe he'll bring some binge worthy AI to the masses. Or maybe he'll just make sure we all get personalized propaganda. You never know with these things.
AI Benefits? Or AI Brainwashing?
Hastings spouts some nonsense about being 'optimistic' about AI and wanting to help humanity. Reminds me of Snow's speeches before the Games. Always a hidden agenda isn't there? He claims Anthropic's approach is the bee's knees. I guess we'll see if it stings like a tracker jacker nest or sweetens the deal like Peeta's bakery.
Money Talks and Bowdoin College Listens
So Hastings throws a cool $50 million at his old college Bowdoin to study AI ethics. Now isn't that generous? It’s supposed to make AI more ethical. It’s like giving Cinna a blank canvas and saying 'Make this nightmare fashion forward!' Let's hope they actually find a way to keep AI from turning into another tyrannical power grab. And maybe he'll teach them how to make bread that can knock people out. You never know when you might need that trick.
Building AI That Helps Not Harms Unless?
Daniela Amodei Anthropic's President says Hastings is perfect for their board because he cares about the 'human impact' of tech. Oh the irony! Remember all those hours we spent arguing about what to watch on Netflix instead of you know surviving? But hey maybe this is a sign of hope. Maybe someone in charge actually cares if these machines turn us all into mindless drones. May the odds be ever in our favor but I am not holding my breathe.
The AI Arms Race: A New Kind of Hunger Games
Anthropic's worth a hefty $61.5 billion and they're trying to keep up with the likes of OpenAI Google and Microsoft. Sounds like a Hunger Games for algorithms doesn't it? I just hope they remember that the real goal isn't winning but making sure nobody gets reaped in the process. I'll stick to my bow and arrow for now. At least I know where the pointy end goes.
