Another Day Another Disaster (Just Kidding... Mostly)
Well folks seems like even in the shiny happy world outside the arena things go wrong. Turns out Ford is recalling a whopping 1,075,299 vehicles. Yes you read that right. A MILLION. Apparently their rearview cameras are about as reliable as Peeta's camouflage skills... before he met those berries of course. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration – try saying that five times fast – says it could increase the risk of a crash. Great just what we need: more mayhem on the roads.
Which Cars Are in the Running... to the Junkyard (Not Really)?
So who’s getting a 'special' delivery from Ford? The list is longer than Gale's brooding silences. We're talking 2021 2024 Bronco F 150 Edge and 2023 2024 Escape Corsair F 250 F 350 F 450 F 550 and F 600. Oh and let's not forget the 2022 2024 Expedition 2022 2025 Transit 2021 2023 Mach E Lincoln Nautilus 2024 Ranger Mustang and the 2022 2024 Navigator. Basically if you bought a Ford in the last few years you might want to check your rearview mirror... or rather its ability to show you anything at all.
The Plot Thickens: Software Sabotage?
According to the NHTSA it's a software error that's causing all the fuss. Apparently these cameras are prone to delaying freezing or just plain not showing anything. It's like trying to get information out of Haymitch before noon – good luck with that. Apparently the accessory protocol interface module (APIM) software is the culprit. Sounds fancy but all you need to know is that it's messing up your dashboard – the same dashboard that should be helping you NOT crash. Always a plus.
Free Fix? What is This the Capitol?
Fear not (too much) dear drivers. Ford dealers will update the APIM software free of charge. Yes you heard that right. FREE. It’s almost like they're trying to bribe us with bread – or maybe just trying to avoid a full blown rebellion. This will be done through an over the air update which basically means your car will get a digital shot in the arm. Hopefully it works better than some of the Peacekeepers I’ve encountered.
Hold Your Horses (or Mustangs): The Waiting Game
Now for the catch (there's always a catch isn't there?). Letters notifying owners of the safety risk are expected by June 16th. But the actual fix? That's not expected until the third quarter of 2025. Yes you have to wait an entire year after receiving the first letter to fix the car. So basically buckle up and drive like you're in the Hunger Games. Be prepared for anything.
Survival Strategy: Eyes on the Road Folks!
So what's the takeaway here? Well if you own one of these Fords keep an eye out for that letter and try not to rely too much on your rearview camera. It might be time to brush up on your old fashioned mirror checking skills. And remember: "Hope it is the only thing stronger than fear." Let's hope Ford fixes this glitch before anyone ends up in a real life arena... on the highway.
