A Preemptive Strike Darling?

Right so picture this: I'm sipping a Martini – shaken not stirred naturally – when Q informs me about Samsung's latest gadget. Apparently they've launched a ludicrously thin phone the Galaxy S25 Edge. 5.8 millimeters thin can you believe it? It's like they’re trying to slip it under the door of Fort Knox. But the timing that's what's interesting. A bit like Goldfinger’s plot unexpected and potentially game changing.

Thinner Than Blofeld's Patience

Now Samsung claims this is about capitalizing on the success of the S25 series. But let's be honest it's a thinly veiled attempt – pun intended – to get ahead of Apple. Whispers of an 'iPhone 17 Air' are floating around and Samsung doesn't want to be caught napping. As they say once is happenstance twice is coincidence and a third time it’s enemy action. And those Chinese players are nipping at their heels like a pack of Dr. No's henchmen.

Tariffs and Tension: A High Stakes Game

Ah tariffs. Always a headache even for yours truly. Apparently the U.S. and China are playing a game of 'pause and resume' with these things. It's all rather tiresome. Thankfully smartphones got a temporary reprieve so Samsung can breathe a bit easier. But Daniel Araujo from Samsung is still worried about the future demand looks like 'The World Is Not Enough' for their ambitions.

The Art of the Deal (or the Discount)

This S25 Edge they say will help “sustain flagship centric sales.” Translation: they're hoping a shiny new toy will distract people from shall we say less desirable economic realities. And at $1,099 it's not exactly pocket change. Though compared to some of my expenses it's practically a steal. Makes me want to ask for my expenses to be adjusted after seeing this price.

Thin is In or is it?

Apparently the whole industry is obsessed with thinness. It's like they're trying to make phones disappear altogether. Ben Wood from CCS Insight says “For the second half of 2025 'thin is most definitely in'.” Well I always say never say never again. But I do hope they don't compromise on functionality. A phone is no good to me if it can't take a decent picture of a villain's lair or make a covert call to Moneypenny.

A Galaxy of Intrigue

So there you have it. Samsung's playing a dangerous game trying to outwit Apple and navigate the treacherous waters of global trade. It's all rather exciting in a 'Live and Let Die' sort of way. I'll be keeping an eye on this of course. After all the world of espionage and technology are becoming increasingly intertwined. And a gadget this slim? It could come in handy for slipping past a security checkpoint or two... or 10!

Who cares about thinness? Give me a better camera!
