Relative Importance Relatively Speaking
Greetings fellow thinkers! Albert Einstein here dusting off my chalkboard to ponder a rather curious development in the financial world. It seems this 'Communication Services Select SPDR Fund,' or XLC as they like to call it holds a modest 9% of the S&P 500's weight. A seemingly small piece of the pie but as I always say 'Small is the new big!' Or perhaps I didn't say that…but I *thought* it! The article states that while not as hefty as Technology (30%) or Consumer Discretionary (10%) its future trajectory is crucial. It reminds me of the time I underestimated the power of a single photon – led to a whole theory of relativity you know! I am being told that the XLC's influence is bigger than it seems; this article tries to unpack the mystery behind it. Because in the grand scheme of things we can never know anything with perfect certainty especially in finance!
The Meta Netflix Alphabet Trinity
Now this XLC is driven by a 'trinity' of sorts: Meta Netflix and Alphabet. Together they constitute a whopping 36% of the ETF! It seems to me that these giants hold the fate of this fund and perhaps the wider market in their digital hands. Netflix I'm told is soaring higher than my hair after a good static shock but Alphabet...well it's lagging a bit. Meta is somewhere in between. This reminds me of my early days pondering Brownian motion. One particle zigs another zags and the observer is left trying to decipher a pattern that could or could not be there! I am being told that there is something special about this 'Meta' company but I believe that everyone and every company is special in its own way. Right?
Cup and Handle? Sounds Like Tea Time!
Apparently the XLC is engaged in a 'major battleground,' whatever that means! The author describes the ETF as hovering near a 'breakout' from a 'cup and handle pattern.' Is this some new form of quantum pastry? Sounds delightful although I am more of a strudel guy. Furthermore the cup is located right beneath a bearish head and shoulders pattern the author writes. It's battling its 200 day moving average which apparently aligns with the 50% retracement. Fascinating! This financial analysis is almost as bewildering as quantum entanglement but perhaps less spooky. It all boils down to this: the XLC must overcome this 'zone.' If XLC can make something of this situation then perhaps it is time for us all to enjoy some apple strudel too.
The S&P Tango
Ah yes the S&P 500. This XLC seems to be dancing a close tango with it since 2019. They rise together they fall together a regular ballet of boom and bust. After the COVID lows they both took off like a rocket only to crash back to Earth a few months later. This behavior I believe resembles the way the moon orbits around the Earth. As they say the only thing that is constant is change. I see a familiar pattern here a push and pull that speaks to the interconnectedness of things. If one of them loses track of its steps then the whole show will be over.
Trends? What Trends?
The article makes it clear that the 'very consistent uptrend' from 2022 through February 2025 is no more. I am being told that the upward sloping trading channel was broken at the end of 2021 leading to the 2022 market decline. That is some worrisome news indeed! To avoid a repeat performance XLC needs to 'build on budding bullish patterns.' Easier said than done! Like trying to herd cats with a laser pointer you know? But if it succeeds it could mean these tech giants are performing well leading the charge like they did before. It sounds like this could mean a change in the momentum of the market.
A Meaningful Impact
So there you have it. The fate of the S&P 500 to some extent hinges on the performance of this XLC which in turn relies on Meta Netflix and Alphabet. A complex web of interdependencies! This reminds me of my attempts to explain the universe with a unified field theory. Still working on that one by the way! It seems the market is never a dull place. It just goes to show that in the market as in physics everything is relative. Now if you will excuse me I think I’ll go and ponder this over a cup of tea. Or perhaps a strudel.

I appreciate the humor! Makes a dry topic much more engaging.

Fascinating analysis! The cup-and-handle analogy made me chuckle.
