London Calling... For a Trade Truce?
Okay so like the U.S. and China had a little chat in London – very 'London Boy' of them right? – and apparently they've reached some sort of 'framework' on trade. It's giving me 'Begin Again' vibes but I'm not entirely convinced it's going to be smooth sailing. Both sides are saying they've got a deal but it still needs the okay from you know *the Presidents*. It's like waiting for your crush to text you back after you've poured your heart out. Stressful!
Geneva Consensus: Is It Really 'Back to December'?
Apparently this whole thing is supposed to 'implement the Geneva consensus.' Sounds fancy doesn't it? Like a secret code in one of my Easter egg hunts. Basically Trump and Xi talked and things are supposedly less 'fraught' now. Remember when everyone was accusing everyone else of breaking the Geneva agreement? Drama! It was giving major 'Mean' vibes. But in May there was agreement to a 90 day pause to tariffs like hitting pause on a sad song to cheer you up before going back to listening to the sad song!
Approval Pending: Waiting for the Presidential 'Okay'
So Lutnick and Greer are off to D.C. to get Trump's signature – literally and figuratively. It’s like waiting for your album to go platinum; you’re on the edge of your seat hoping everyone loves it as much as you do. If Xi agrees too then 'we will implement the framework,' Lutnick said. Cue the confetti... or maybe just cautious optimism. 'Cause let's be real nothing's ever *that* easy.
The Skeptic's Corner: 'All Too Well' or 'Out of the Woods'?
Jianwei Xu from Natixis is throwing a little shade saying that needing to brief the leaders suggests there are still 'disagreements or unresolved details.' Ouch. It's giving 'All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor's Version) (From the Vault)' vibes – complex emotional and potentially never ending. He says whether it leads to 'concrete agreements' is uncertain. So basically we're still 'Out of the Woods,' aren't we?
Rare Earths and Tech: A 'Delicate' Balancing Act
Apparently this whole deal hinges on Chinese restrictions on rare earth exports and U.S. tech sales. It's like a 'Delicate' balancing act – one wrong move and the whole thing collapses. The U.S. wants China to play nice with the rare earths and in return they'll ease up on the tech restrictions. Sounds like a high stakes poker game doesn't it?
Taped Together: 'This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things'?
Scott Kennedy from the Center for Strategic and International Studies is not mincing words. He says this deal is 'taped together by the two sides' leverage over each other not common principles.' Ouch again! It's giving 'This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things' vibes. He thinks the 'chances for further stops and starts is quite high.' So buckle up Swifties. This could be a bumpy ride.
