Game Set Match... BYD?
Zdravo champions! It's your favorite tennis player Novak Djokovic here serving you the latest news but not on the court! This time we're talking about something electrifying – BYD the Chinese electric car behemoth is making a play for Europe with its Denza brand. Yes you heard it right! It seems like everyone wants a piece of the European automotive pie these days. Are they going to have the 'mental strength' to pull it off? Only time will tell...
Denza's Grand Entrance: Milan Fashion Week... For Cars!
So Denza the premium brand that sounds like it could be a cool European city is launching its Z9GT model in Europe by the fourth quarter of 2025. They announced this during Brera Design Week in Milan. Milan? Fashion? Cars? Talk about a power move! I'm picturing sleek lines cutting edge tech and maybe even a self parking feature that can handle the chaos of Italian traffic. This Z9GT station wagon promises both battery only and plug in hybrid versions. Decisions decisions... it's all about making the right choice right?
From Daimler's Sidekick to Center Court Star
Now here's a bit of history for you. BYD and Daimler – you know Mercedes Benz – initially teamed up for Denza back in 2010. But BYD revamped the brand in 2021 and now Mercedes has a smaller piece of the action. It’s like that doubles partner who realizes you’re the one destined for the Grand Slam. I can relate naturally. This Denza brand is already making waves in China so Europe might be next. They certainly have the 'belief' to do it.
Trade Winds and Electric Dreams
Of course it's not all sunshine and roses. The European Union slapped a 17% duty on BYD's electric vehicles because of those pesky “unfair” production subsidies. Seems like someone's trying to play defense eh? But fear not! Chinese and EU officials are talking so maybe they'll reach a 'peace and love' agreement. BYD is also planning to launch a seven seat multi purpose vehicle called the D9. Perfect for those post match celebrations with the whole team wouldn't you say?
Overseas Surge: The BYD Ace
BYD has been crushing it overseas since late 2022. In the first quarter of this year they sold over 206,000 cars outside China. That's more than double the previous year! Their revenue is skyrocketing. They're basically serving aces left and right. And they're doing it by focusing on the electric vehicle market leaving those old gas guzzlers in the dust. It's all about adapting people. Change is the only constant after all.
The Tesla Rivalry: A New Challenger Approaches
Here's the kicker: BYD is going after a lower price segment than Tesla. In fact they sold more battery only passenger cars than Tesla in China in the first quarter! Is this the beginning of a new era? The rise of a new automotive champion? Only time will tell but one thing's for sure: competition is good for everyone. Now if you'll excuse me I'm off to practice my own serves. Perhaps I'll see you all on the road... in a Denza maybe?

BYD is seriously impressive. Tesla better watch out.

I wonder if the D9 has enough space for my kids and their friends.
