Winning Isn't Everything... Or Is It?

Alright folks Novak here. You know me always striving for perfection on the court. But this news about Trump and deep sea mining? Even I a champion of peak performance am thinking 'Hold on a sec mate!' Apparently the big guy wants to jump start deep sea mining to beat China in the 'critical minerals' race. Nickel copper rare earth elements – sounds like a new super smoothie recipe doesn't it? But seriously he is looking to expedite mining permits under the Deep Seabed Hard Minerals Act of 1980. It's like he's saying 'I didn't get to play by my rules in the vaccine game so I will play by my own rules at the bottom of the sea. And yes I will play it fast!'

Seabed Shenanigans and U.S. Outer Continental Shelf

Trump claims this move is vital for U.S. national security and economic interests. That may be so. But here's the kicker: critics are saying it contradicts global efforts to regulate this potentially destructive industry. Sounds a bit like my situation in Australia a couple of years back eh? Rules are rules unless you're well you know... Anyway the order even wants to speed up permits for mining 'in areas beyond national jurisdiction.' Talk about going rogue! I guess 'Djokovic' wasn't available so they went with 'Deep Sea' as the next best thing to cause international chaos.

Potato Sized Problems and a Salty Future

So what is this deep sea mining thing anyway? Apparently it involves heavy machinery scooping up minerals from the seabed. These minerals end up in electric vehicle batteries wind turbines and solar panels. The stuff we need for a clean future. Advocates claim it will reduce reliance on land mining. The scientists are screaming: “The full environmental impacts are hard to predict!” Environmental groups are losing it claiming irreversible ecosystem destruction. Potato sized nodules? I guess they missed out on my gluten free organic diet.

Greenpeace's Got Beef! (Seaweed Beef That Is)

Greenpeace is not happy calling it an insult to multilateralism. Arlo Hemphill even said 'We condemn this administration's attempt to launch this destructive industry on the high seas in the Pacific by bypassing the United Nations process'. Ouch! That's a backhand winner straight to the ego. The International Seabed Authority (ISA) this little known U.N. regulator has been trying to figure out the rules before anyone starts digging. They've been at it for years! Trump's move throws a wrench into their carefully laid plans. Someone get those regulators some aromatherapy.

2025 and Beyond: The Clock is Ticking

The ISA aims to have formal rules in place by the end of 2025. Critics are scratching their heads about the timing of Trump's executive order. The U.S. hasn't even ratified the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)! It's like showing up to Wimbledon without a racket. You may still win in some people's books but you are not going to win on the court. This agency is responsible for a whopping 54% of the world's oceans. That is enough water to hydrate me for a millennia!

Unexpected Alliances and Geopolitical Drama

Analysts at Eurasia Group suggest this could escalate global tensions and lead to 'unexpected country alliances'. Apparently actions by the U.S. and a Canadian firm are being criticized by over 40 countries including China Russia and Britain! Even Norway which considered seabed mining is now siding with China India and Poland against the U.S. It's like the tennis world but with more submarines and less grunting... maybe. The concern? The U.S. is bypassing previously agreed processes. Sounds familiar doesn’t it? What a great way to start a World War lets mine the sea!

Global tensions are rising, and this doesn't help.
