By Hera! The Tech Titans Thirst for Juice!
Greetings mortals! Wonder Woman here reporting live from the front lines of the energy crisis. It appears our friends in Silicon Valley are developing a rather *substantial* craving for electricity all thanks to this 'artificial intelligence' everyone's chattering about. Apparently thinking machines require copious amounts of power. Who knew? Certainly not Ares who prefers his battles fueled by good old fashioned rage and a hearty breakfast. Anyway this surge in demand has sparked a veritable nuclear arms race – but for peaceful purposes naturally. We're talking about small advanced reactors the kind that promise to be cheaper and faster to build than those behemoths of yesteryear. Let's hope they don't become another Trojan Horse situation eh?
Seventy Years of the Same Old Song and Dance!
For seven decades we've mostly relied on pressurized water reactors a technology as old as Steve Trevor's flying skills (okay maybe not *that* old but close!). But these plants bless their antiquated hearts have proven incredibly expensive especially here in the U.S. Case in point: Plant Vogtle in Georgia which went over budget by a sum that could probably buy Themyscira...twice! And it was fashionably late. Chris Levesque CEO of TerraPower wisely notes that sticking with the old tech is simply unaffordable. I concur. Even Hippolyta knows that progress is essential though she still insists on using carrier pigeons for urgent matters. Go figure!
A Crowded Field and Capital Concerns!
Now here's where things get a bit dicey. The industry is overflowing with over 90 different reactor technologies all vying for a spot in the energy pantheon. That's more competition than I face in the annual Amazon Games! John Ketchum CEO of NextEra Energy rightly points out that we need to narrow down the contenders. Too many underfunded startups are diluting the pool. It's like trying to assemble the Justice League from a phone book. We need to pick the most promising candidates and give them the support they need to succeed lest we end up with another 'Batman v Superman' debacle!
Tech Giants to the Rescue! (Maybe...)
Enter the tech giants! Alphabet Amazon Meta Microsoft – these titans possess more wealth than Croesus and are eager to throw their weight behind the nuclear revival. They are a 'huge force' says Levesque that can drive the industry forward and he is right! Their insatiable demand for power coupled with their deep pockets makes them the perfect catalysts for change. However let's not forget the wisdom of the ages: 'Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.' We must ensure these companies wield their influence responsibly. After all even the gods are subject to the laws of ethics or at least they *should* be!
The Contenders: TerraPower X Energy and Kairos Power!
Let's size up the gladiators in this energy arena: TerraPower backed by Bill Gates and others is already breaking ground on its first plant in Wyoming. They're using sodium as a coolant which allows them to operate at lower pressure saving on construction costs. X Energy funded by Amazon uses helium gas and has its own fancy fuel pebbles. They're aiming to deploy reactors in Washington state and Texas. Then there's Kairos Power partnering with Google to supply YouTube with 500 megawatts. They also use molten fluoride salt as a coolant. It's a regular smorgasbord of technological innovation! But remember folks it's not just about the technology; it's about execution. As Kairos CEO Mike Laufer wisely states the winners will be those who can actually deliver projects.
The Future is Nuclear (Probably)!?
So what does the future hold? Well according to the experts we could see the first advanced reactor online around 2031 with more to follow around 2035. Whether this nuclear renaissance will truly materialize remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: the world needs clean reliable energy sources and nuclear power has the potential to play a vital role. Let's just hope that this quest for power doesn't lead us down a dark path. As I always say 'Only love can truly save the world.' But a little bit of clean energy wouldn't hurt either! Wonder Woman signing off... for now!

Is anyone else worried about the potential for these reactors to be targets for terrorists?

Tech companies meddling in energy? What could possibly go wrong?!

I'm cautiously optimistic. Nuclear is a necessary evil, but hopefully, these advanced reactors will be safer and more efficient.
