A License to Ill Will?
Well this is a fine mess. Trump in what I can only assume is a misguided attempt to 'Make America Great Again' (again?) has slapped tariffs on pretty much everyone including our friends at the EU. Seems he's gone all 'reciprocal tariff' on us. Reciprocal? Sounds more like 'retaliatory' if you ask me. As I always say 'Never say never again' but frankly this situation is less than ideal. A bit like finding out your martini was made with tap water.
Von der Leyen's Fighting Stance
Our girl in Brussels Ursula von der Leyen isn't taking it lying down naturally. She's threatening countermeasures preparing to 'protect our interests and our businesses.' Sounds like a Bond girl who knows how to handle a Walther PPK. She's calling for negotiations but let's be honest negotiating with Trump is like trying to reason with a particularly stubborn Blofeld. 'No Mr. Bond I expect you to negotiate!'
Global Economic Mayhem
Von der Leyen is warning of 'immense consequences,' a 'major blow' to the world economy. She has a point. This could spiral into a real mess impacting everyone from steel magnates to your average consumer buying a new car. It's a gamble and as I well know 'a good gamble is one where you have all the odds in your favor.' Sadly this doesn't seem to be the case.
The EU's Arsenal: Bourbon and Knitting Needles?
So what weapons does the EU have in its arsenal? Well they're threatening counter tariffs on a range of US goods including bourbon agricultural products and… knitting needles? Knitting needles? Really? I'd rather face Oddjob's hat. Apparently these measures aim to protect European workers and consumers. I'm not entirely sure how a bourbon tariff helps a steelworker but who am I to question the logic of bureaucrats?
Old Wounds Reopened
The EU is dusting off old tariffs previously suspended during Trump's first stint. Seems like they're preparing to 'live and let die' when it comes to US trade. Industrial grade steel aluminum machinery parts… the whole shebang. It's a bit like a Bond villain resurrecting an old scheme – predictable but still potentially dangerous.
A World is Not Enough... to Contain This Trade War
We can only hope these blokes can sort things out without the world economy going to hell in a handbasket. Because as much as I love a good shaken martini I prefer my global trade to be well stirred gently not blown to smithereens. Let's just hope they can find a 'goldeneye' of opportunity to de escalate this mess. Otherwise it's going to be 'tomorrow never dies' for international trade relations.
