Puss in Boots reports on Lisa Su's tightrope walk between U.S. export controls and the allure of the Chinese AI market, a balancing act worthy of El Gato himself!

The Purr plexing Predicament

Madre de Dios! It is I Puss in Boots reporting live from the front lines of… semiconductors? Si amigos even a dashing gato needs to keep up with the times! Lisa Su the grande fromage of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has found herself in a bit of a pickle like a hairball coughed up after a particularly enthusiastic yarn chasing session. China that land of mystical dragons and suspiciously cheap porcelain cats is a 'large opportunity' for the AI chip biz she says. But those pesky export controls and tariff troubles? Ay caramba! They loom like El Chupacabra on a dark night.

A Balancing Act worthy of El Gato

Su insists there’s a 'balance to be played,' like trying to juggle a dozen sombreros while riding a unicycle. She wants export controls for 'national security' (whatever that means in this digital age) but also wants everyone to buy her chips. A truly admirable sentiment like wanting to eat all the cream in the world but still fit into your favorite boots. She claims that widespread AI adoption is a 'really great position' for the U.S. Like being the only gato in a room full of unattended milk bowls!

The $1.5 Billion Hairball

Now here's where it gets hairy like a… well you get the idea. AMD is expecting a $1.5 billion hit from those China export controls! That's a lot of gold doubloons for even this swashbuckler to cough up. They're also bracing for up to $800 million in costs to ship those fancy MI308 products. It seems Uncle Sam is playing a bit of hardball with China restricting the sale of advanced AI processors that could turn into robot warriors! *shudders* Reminds me of the time Humpty Dumpty tried to build an army of egg soldiers. Didn't end well.

Tariff Troubles and Trump's Tango

And just when you thought the tortilla couldn't get any hotter enter President Trump's tariff tango! Investors are scrambling for clues like a flea searching for a new home trying to figure out if all this will put a dent in demand. Su ever the cool cucumber (or should I say suave señorita?) says AMD would 'prefer a more certain environment.' Tell me about it! I prefer my milk served at the purr fect temperature not too hot not too cold. But hey at least they are moving manufacturing to the US!

Agility is my Middle Name (Well Almost)

But fear not amigos! Su assures us that AMD has become 'very agile,' like this gato when dodging a grumpy ogre. The impact from tariffs is just a 'minor blip,' and sales in April were 'robust'! They're watching the trends 'very carefully' and will react 'appropriately.' Which in my experience usually involves a dramatic leap a perfectly timed hiss and maybe a quick escape through a conveniently placed cat flap.

Other CEOs Cry me a River

Even that Nvidia fellow Jensen Huang is lamenting the potential loss of the Chinese market. He says it would be a 'tremendous loss'! Everyone wants the dragon's gold it seems. One thing is certain the AI chip market is rapidly expanding like my legend and this situation requires wisdom and wit and I happen to have both! After all what is life without a little adventure a little risk and a whole lot of cream?
