Up Up and... More Teams!

Greetings citizens of Earth! It's your friendly neighborhood Superman here to report on a truly super event. The Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) has just announced it's adding THREE new teams! That's right like a phone booth transformation the league is expanding faster than I can change into my super suit. Cleveland Detroit and Philadelphia get ready to cheer – you're about to be part of something amazing! WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert called it a "truly monumental day." Monumental indeed! I haven't seen this much excitement since Lois Lane almost figured out my secret identity for the tenth time.

A League of Their Own (and More!)

The WNBA is currently soaring with 13 teams and with Toronto and Portland joining in 2026 it's clear the sky's the limit! By 2030 we'll have a whopping 18 teams making the league more exciting than a Lex Luthor plot involving Kryptonite and a bad toupee. These are "powerful cities filled with passionate fan bases," she said. "This is a bold step forward as we grow our footprint." But let's not forget with great power comes great responsibility... to provide awesome games! Cleveland will tip off in 2028 Detroit in 2029 and Philly in 2030. Get your jerseys ready!

Franchise Fees: Higher Than a Skyscraper!

Now about those franchise fees... Commissioner Engelbert is keeping those numbers tighter than my Fortress of Solitude's security. She did mention they're at "historic levels." I can only imagine how many ice sculptures that could buy for my Fortress! Let's just say owning a WNBA team is no small change. It's a commitment bigger than my promise to protect Earth.

Cleveland Rocks (Again!)

Cleveland is no stranger to women's basketball. They had the Cleveland Rockers back in the day from 1997 to 2003. Sadly they folded due to low attendance. But fear not Cleveland! Like a phoenix rising from the ashes (or maybe a really enthusiastic basketball fan) the city is ready to embrace the WNBA once more! "Today marks a transformative day in Cleveland's sports history," said Nic Barlage CEO of the Rock Entertainment Group. Let's hope this time the only thing folding is the opposing team under the pressure of Cleveland's awesome plays.

Motor City's Got Game

Detroit is also making a grand return to women's basketball after a two decade hiatus. The Detroit Shock were champions setting attendance records before moving to Tulsa. "This is a huge win for our city," said Arn Tellem the vice chairman of the Detroit Pistons. "It's much bigger than basketball." And who knows maybe some of the old Shock players will come back to mentor the new generation of stars. Like Jor El sending me to Earth sometimes a second chance is all you need to become something truly special!

Philly Gets in the Game!

Last but not least Philadelphia! Josh Harris representing Philly said bringing the WNBA to the city "wasn't just a nice to have it was an obligation." Now that's the spirit! With the Sixers and the Eagles already exciting the city adding a WNBA team is just the cherry on top of a Philly cheesesteak. It's a win for the city a win for women's sports and a win for anyone who enjoys seeing super athletes do super things!
