A Grievous Wound in the Market
Greetings fellow sentient beings! Optimus Prime here reporting on a disturbance in the Force... I mean the stock market. Apparently a certain Earth leader has proposed a rather 'interesting' tariff on films made outside your borders. Now I've faced down Megatron more times than I can count but even I find this news a bit... perplexing. Shares of Netflix Disney and others took a hit faster than Starscream fleeing a battle. Seems like 'freedom is the right of all sentient beings,' except maybe when it comes to making movies overseas.
Trump's Truth Bomb: A National Security Threat?
This leader claims that tax incentives offered by foreign countries are 'a national security threat.' I must admit I've battled planet eating robots and intergalactic warlords but I never considered a tax break to be a weapon of mass destruction. Perhaps he's seen too many sci fi films himself? I guess he believes 'one shall stand one shall fall,' but in this case it seems Hollywood is doing the falling.
The Unclear Path: A Road Rarely Traveled
The details are murkier than a Cybertronian swamp after a rainstorm. How will this tariff be implemented? Who pays? Will it affect TV shows too? It's all a bit like trying to decipher the Allspark without a proper translator. It's unclear which part of the production process would be hit with this duty? Would it apply only to movie projects or will TV shows filmed internationally also incur this levy? Are already completed projects exempt?
Digital Delivery: More Than Meets the Eye
Now some experts are saying it won't be *that* bad because most films are shot digitally these days. It's not like shipping Energon cubes across the galaxy. Still even a digital transfer can face a few glitches when you are talking about that much financial weight. It is good that unlike toys clothing or say Cybertronian parts the data can be shared easily.
International Relations: Til All are One... Or Are They?
Here's where things get dicey. Hollywood depends on international box office sales to keep those hefty film budgets afloat. If other countries retaliate well that's a problem bigger than Unicron himself. I always thought 'til all are one' was a good motto but maybe that's just me. China has already closed its doors to Hollywood product so it can be expected that other regions might retaliate.
Autobots Transform and Roll Out... Of Hollywood?
So what does this all mean? It means Hollywood might have to rethink its strategy. Maybe they'll start filming everything in one giant soundstage in Burbank? Or perhaps they'll come to Cybertron; we have plenty of space and some pretty spectacular scenery if you don't mind the occasional Decepticon attack. Either way one thing is clear: Change is coming. And as we all know 'fate rarely calls upon us at a moment of our choosing.'
