A Minecraft Movie's massive debut has shaken up the box office, surpassing even the Super Mario Bros. Movie and injecting new life into the year's earnings. Let's-a go see what happened!

It's a Me... Second Best?!

Mamma mia! It seems a new challenger has entered the arena! That's right folks it's a me Mario reporting on some shocking news. Warner Bros.' "Minecraft Movie" has done the impossible! It jumped it stomped and it collected 163 million coins at the domestic box office on its opening weekend. Can you believe it?! That's more than my own "Super Mario Bros. Movie" made on its debut! It's like Bowser just stole my power up!

Block by Block They Built an Empire

These Minecraft folks they're not playing around! They've not only grabbed the highest opening for a video game movie adaptation but they also rescued the box office from a first quarter slump. Apparently Generation Z and Alpha are big fans! Shawn Robbins from Fandango (which is owned by Comcast just like my friends at NBCUniversal) says these young folks are looking for fresh and familiar content. Well at least they have good taste! But still wah wah it stings a little.

IMAX = I'm a Maximumly Annoyed!

And get this – "Minecraft" also set a record for Cinemark and raked in $22 million at IMAX screens! That's the biggest haul since "Deadpool & Wolverine." It's like they found a secret warp zone to success! Paul Dergarabedian from Comscore says the movie took the year to date box office deficit from 13% to just 5%. Seems like everyone loves blocks more than mushrooms these days...

Still a Some fight left!

Don't get me wrong I'm a happy for them! But my movie still has got the number one global gross of all time for game based adaptations. This year hasn't been all bad for the big studios. Disney and Marvel's "Captain America: Brave New World" is doing okay with just under $200 million. Universal's "Dog Man" and Disney's "Snow White" are hanging in there too but they are no number one! I believe things are heating up for the summer. Oh yeah I'll just have to try even harder next time!

Second Quarter to the Rescue!

Eric Handler an analyst at Roth (not the bad guy from those old cartoons the financial kind) says "Minecraft's" success is a great start to the second quarter. Apparently there are lots of big movies coming out soon like Disney and Marvel's "Thunderbolts*," "Mission Impossible," "Lilo and Stitch," "How to Train Your Dragon," "Jurassic World Rebirth," "Superman," and "The Fantastic Four." Maybe I'll catch a showing or two you know for research!

Wahoo! Plenty More Movies to Come!

Handler also mentioned there are potentially nine movies that could make over $100 million this quarter. That's a lot of coins! Looks like theaters are making a comeback and I'm a all for it! After all a rising tide lifts all go karts! Wahoo! Looks like there's still a lot of life in this old plumber yet! I'll a just need to find a star to get back on top!
