Ridin' in Cars (Maybe) With Boys
Okay Swifties buckle up because we need to talk about Tesla's robotaxis. So Elon bless his heart finally rolled out these driverless wonders in Austin. Picture this: a fleet of about 10 20 cars all under supervision only for the super exclusive invitees. It's like a secret listening party but instead of hearing 'All Too Well,' you're hoping you don't end up 'all too lost' on the wrong side of the road. Because let's face it we all know how much I love a good car ride (think 'Style' music video) but not if it involves a 'Getaway Car' situation. The stock jumped 8% after the reveal – which in Swiftie terms is like going platinum overnight. But has since calmed down a bit which kind of reminds me of trying to calm down my cat Meredith after a thunderstorm. Point is it's a mixed bag of emotions right now.
Smooth Like a 'Blank Space' or a 'Cruel Summer' Road Trip?
Now opinions are as varied as my songwriting styles. Wedbush analyst Dan Ives gushed that the robotaxis were 'extremely smooth' and even better than Waymo! Talk about a 'Love Story' of tech admiration. Meanwhile other experiences were... well let's just say less 'Fearless' and more 'Folklore' – full of unexpected twists and turns. Apparently some cars decided to channel their inner rebels and drive on the wrong side of the road. One even decided to have a little 'break' in the middle of traffic and another one braked suddenly. And oh god the horror; another decided to drop a passenger in the middle of an intersection. Cue the dramatic music!
From 'Teardrops on My Guitar' to 'Teardrops on the Asphalt'
Analyst Gordon Johnson isn't exactly singing Tesla's praises. He called the robotaxis 'robotaxi infants' that need constant supervision to avoid causing mayhem. Ouch! It's like calling my songwriting skills 'questionable' – I mean people have but it still stings. Remember back in 2016 when Elon promised a future where your Tesla would earn you money while you're off living your best '22' life? Yeah that hasn't exactly materialized. He even claimed a million robotaxis by 2020! It’s giving ‘never ever ever getting back together’ vibes with those predictions.
Radar Lidar? Honey We're Doing It 'Our Way'
Tesla's taking the 'Wildest Dreams' approach and ditching radar and lidar for cameras only. It's like deciding to write an entire album using just a ukulele – bold but will it work? Everyone else in the self driving game like Alphabet's Waymo and Amazon's Zoox are using both. Musk thinks software can make up the difference. It’s like saying you can make a cake with no flour just sheer determination. I admire the ambition but I'm also side eyeing it a little. Is he trying to rewrite the 'Rules' of autonomous driving?
The 'All Too Well' of a General Solution
Ed Niedermeyer who has been keeping an eye on Tesla has a point. He thinks what Tesla is doing is like 'teaching a dog to drive'. Sure it's impressive but are we building a business around it? Tesla is aiming for a 'general solution,' where every Tesla can drive itself anywhere anytime. It’s giving 'Speak Now' vibes – ambitious maybe a little naive? He points out that if you want to cover every single condition imaginable how are you ever going to cover enough miles to be sure it works? Everyone else like Waymo is sticking to smaller areas. Which brings me to think is Elon’s dream of Teslas roaming all over the world just a 'Daylight' dream?
Believers Gonna Believe... In Tesla's 'End Game'?
Despite all the hiccups some people are still rooting for Tesla. Darko Protich an Austin resident is all in! He's owned Teslas and even tried Waymo's version. And Michael Simon is just amazed by what Elon is up to. It's sweet that these people still believe even when things get rocky. But at the end of the day are Tesla's robotaxis destined to be a 'Timeless' success or are they just another tech 'Hoax'? Only time will tell. And until then I'll be over here writing songs about it.
